Challenge: Natural Numbers (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: My kitchen table
Date: Mar 6, 2003
Aperture: F 2.8
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/3 s
Galleries: Landscape, Macro
Date Uploaded: Mar 6, 2003

Taken at 2:00 am on my kitchen table, after agonizing that I would never find a "Natural Number".

A shell from my daughter's collection. Set on a mirror with a picture of a sunset that I took as the background. Lighting is from the overhead kitchen halogen with a flashlight for a little frontal fill. I used my hand as a shade so that the halogen did not completely overexpose the shot.I rested the camera in protrait mode on the table and used the timer on the camera to avoid shake. This is the full frame. There was no cropping. Slight level adjustments, small amount of saturation, and USM in PS, and ran it through NeatImage. Border in PS.

I've got a feeling about this one.....

Don't forget the 'fibonacci number' aspect to the shell's swirl :)

Well it took some time, but finally a ribbon! WOOHOO! I'm really psyched! Can't believe it held up, given the tough competition this week. Congrats to the others.

Thanks for all the great comments, on this challenge and all the previous ones. We improve so much when we get constructive comments, and I owe this ribbon to all the great people at DPC who have helped me learn and better my photographs.

On to the next challenge....

Mario

beautiful color, nice and sharp focus, does look like a six.
03/16/2003 05:20:58 AM
I would have gone for more shell and reflexion and less sunset. spectacular but could be improved balance wise.

It's a wonderful image, but I'm afraid I'm marking you down on the 'man-made' qualification. Great clarity, and an intriguing idea

Simply wonderful. The composition is great, the colors are breathtaking. There is nothing in this shot that I would change. Great set up and very well done!

great shot and awesome colors, personally I would have liked to see the back ground in focus also...
03/12/2003 10:37:53 AM
beautiful! cropped just a bit too close on the bottom, but otherwise, it's wonderful!

Interesting concept. Is that a real sunset, or a backdrop? Either way, the bright bg was a good choice for the sort of blandly colored shell. I like the idea of the reflection, cause it givees you the 9 too, but as you know, it's slightly cut off on the bottom.

The DOF is too shallow to make this a really effective shot. The colors are great, the shell is great, the framing I think could be better but the DOF is just too shallow
03/10/2003 09:12:51 PM
Very beautiful picture.
03/10/2003 07:22:46 PM
very nice image. I enjoy it.
03/10/2003 06:42:50 PM
very nice. i love the reflection of the shell, and the photo was a perfect choice for the background. focus and clarity are excelent. definately numbers and they are as natural as it gets. i wonder if you may have cut if just a small bit close to the bottom shell. i may have liked to see the entire shell. however, It's just a suggestion, you may have a good reason it's cut so close. sometimes you simply have to to cut out other things. either way, it's still an excelent shot. good luck in the challenge.

This one will win probably. It is EXCELLENT!! I love the red background also. The only thing is without the reflection of the shell might have been a little better. 9.

Very nice colors/concept. I only wish you had included the whole shell in the reflection. Is the sunset real or a photo?
