I THINK I hid this one in my portfolio. At least I hope I did.

Had an unproductive year shooting-wise, EXCEPT for my kids. Really started to take some good, interesting, not-of-the-ordinary photos of them.

This is just a great use of a super wide angle lens. I hope I can do as well with my new 10-22mm lens. So far, I haven't! Good luck in the challenge--this is one of my top pics.

you should know that bulldozers are supposed to be yellow. Ask the late Douglas Adams (If you can get hold of him).

Excellent shot. Love how you placed yourself low to the ground to get this. Adds a lot to the overall feel. One of the best photos of children in this challenge
01/30/2005 04:18:33 PM
Not an average 'kiddie pic' at all. Good classic vibe from this with a good candid vibe - a feeling that he truly doesn't know or care about your presence. Love the use of mono, and while centering doesn't normally go down well this somehow looks good for it.
01/29/2005 10:55:05 AM
Wow. Great shot, great angle, good use of B&W.
01/29/2005 01:54:35 AM
Looks like an ad campaign for jeans. Kdding. Nice shot Great perspective and focus. Love the concentration on the face

This needs to get a ribbon. I love the angle, the lighting, great composition and sharpness.
01/25/2005 11:02:08 PM
Very good composition and a great choice for B&W.
Excellent contrast & tone. Some parent (you?) should be proud to hang this one. ((8))
01/25/2005 04:05:49 PM
excellent capture! great job with the exposure and controlling the lighting. parents kill for images like this, and this boy's parents sure are lucky with this one! i hope this isn't getting overlooked in this super-sized challenge, and that viewers are giving this the time necessary to appreciate it. thanks for sharing. good luck with this, and all the challenges yet to come!

Perfect gray, perfect depth of field, cute model ;-)....if only I could give this shot an 11, I would give it !... My absolute favourite ! Best regards - Etienne (Switzerland)
01/22/2005 09:27:23 AM
very nice candid. The toning you used really sets a mood.
01/22/2005 09:03:09 AM
fantastic.
01/22/2005 04:30:34 AM
I'd add it to my favourites but it's already there. One thing I do notice (that may not have been in your other versions) is a light banding in the upper left. Looks like a burning artifact, and it's distracting. Have you considered a square crop? It has a medium format feel to it and it might suit it well. One of my few 10s. Good luck.
01/22/2005 01:34:30 AM
Love it. Seen it before and still love it. 10
01/21/2005 02:19:50 PM
This is a great shot. He looks so intent on what he is doing. LOL Love the B&W
01/21/2005 11:38:10 AM
There are a lot of beautiful photos in this challenge, but I believe this one is probably my favorite. Nice work :)
01/21/2005 08:57:43 AM
What a great shot...Wonderfully composed and love the conversion to B&W. Well Done.
01/20/2005 05:20:25 PM
Great picture. It reminds me of those vintage greeting cards and prints that I love so much.. Love the black and white too.
01/20/2005 03:24:56 PM
An excellent picture, I wonder if cropping a little more of the sky would improve it?
01/20/2005 01:54:51 PM
A lovely portrait, good concentrated expression, total absorbed by his own activities and forgetting the surroundings. Good to have those people in the background and good use of depth of field. Nice wide angle surroundings as well. With the view to the left as it is I would try to crop a bit of the right of the image (and probably also the top) to bring him a bit more to the middle/right in the image.
01/19/2005 09:10:47 PM
This shot has a very unique and eye catching perspective. Great DOF. Super job.
01/19/2005 08:27:59 PM
LOVE IT! 10 GOOD LUCK. I hope u ribbon!
01/19/2005 04:32:07 PM
First, neener neener to those who said kiddie shots won't place. Second, what a GREAT shot of a busy construction worker at the beach! My guess? A top 5% placement in the contest!

Hi Matt
No problem in my providing feedback, this is one of the nicer children pics entered into this challenge IMHO. I gave it a 7 though I mentally put it at about 7.5!
I like the composition well, though I think you could do with a touch more image at the left and a touch left at the right. He feels too far to the left to me. I love the very low viewpoint; it really takes us into his world. The total concentration is a feeling we have all experienced and the freedom to be so absorbed in leisure, in the way that young children often are, is something we all still hanker after. That's what makes this a universal image for me rather than a boring shot of someone's kid. I like your choice to present the image in toned black and white ; it adds a timeless quality. I also like the out of focus crowd far behind, the pretty clouds in the sky and the lovely texture of the sand in the foreground. Altogether a lovely image and grows on me the more I view it.

Great piece of work here, nice tones
01/17/2005 08:51:25 PM
My favorite "kid" shot of the challenge. I love the wide angle and the DOF in this shot. The child is so intent on what he is doing he probably didn't even know his picture was being taken. Very nicely done. 10
01/17/2005 04:18:01 PM
wow - heres a contender for top ten - I can just hear the bulldozer brrrrrr
01/17/2005 12:32:13 PM
Great use of wide angle, and very brave of you to let your equipment so near this much sand! Makes me think of Martin Parr. 10
01/16/2005 07:43:33 PM
This is really great! I love the sky behind him! 10 from me!
01/16/2005 09:21:13 AM
Beautiful texture in this B&W. You have captured the ability of a young child to focus on the simple things in life. Very well done 8.
01/16/2005 09:12:02 AM
Great perspective, I like it how the background tells about the area he is playing in. Good how the sky gives space. Like the toning.
01/16/2005 07:34:45 AM
Excellent work. Processing is superb.
01/16/2005 06:03:15 AM
Simply stunning. Such a great portrait. I had any criticism at all, but I don't. I love the composition, the depth of field. Everything works perfectly together. 10.
01/16/2005 05:10:42 AM
Wonderful... I love the look, feel, the contrast, and the perspective as well as the depth of field... Oh wait, I like everything about this photo!
01/16/2005 03:22:51 AM
Well this is a lesson to everyone who takes photographs of children. Simply terrific. DOF is perfect, you have isolated him tremendously well. One of the best images I have seen so far, this is the kind of stuff that could make you a very nice living as an upscale portrait photographer. 10.
01/16/2005 01:24:34 AM
Wow! My first comment, after many many votes. This is top notch photography! 10 + if I could! -danny
