Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA. The Needles

aperture
1. An opening, such as a hole, gap, or slit.
2. A usually adjustable opening in an optical instrument, such as a camera or telescope, that limits the amount of light passing through a lens or onto a mirror.
3. The diameter of such an opening, often expressed as an f-number.

This was taken on a run I took on the beach January 24. I had no idea I would get such an image, but I had my camera along, just in case. I actaully didn't consider this image for the challenge until about a day before challenge (being that I took it the day after the challenge opened).

Other possibilities:

Original

Editing: Lot of spot editing for foot steps in the sand, little bit of color adjustment (little magenta and red, and blue shadow), b&c, image size, usm, lil bump in saturation.

Wow... this is gorgeous! I'm heading out to an adventure soon. I need to remember this and set up some photography shots as opposed to just bird or landscape shots.

Just added this one to my favorites. Wow. Awesome color, composition, and mood to this beautiful shot. You have nailed the sunlight and brought out all the reflections and beach interest as well. I agree with someone below who said this needs to be on a magazine cover. You really should be entering this everyplace you can!

Congratulations for being the one God chose to click the shutter on this one :o)

I love this picture. I went and looked at your website and you have some awesome pictures! I'm from Oregon (moved to Florida in 98) and I used to go to Bandon all the time.... your photos make me terribly homesick :)

You have to be very proud of this image, I would like to see this on a cover of a photo magazine, I suggest you submit to Outdoor Photographer and others, I'm sure they would love it as well. Now I want to head down to the Oregon coast for a few days. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Thomas: This image is one of the most complete ones I have seen of a sunset. The quality of the radiance is very captivating and the silhoutte figure helps depict the magic of these warm tones. This capture has power and most important untold beauty. Congratulations on this exceptional effort.

Altough I have run with camera and tripod before (my Solitude shot was taken on a run back from being dropped off at Haystack), I didn't have a tripod this time, just my f717 in the camera bag clutched in an arm (alternated from time to time), and a slow-moderate pace. It does turn into a walk when I am shooting though =). I am training for Track season, but my passion for photography and love of running conflict. So this was is my temporary solution (in the future, I'd like to get a small camera that I could run more easily with though).

Superb exposure, great weather conditions and lovely composition. The feeling of depth is tangible with some lovely glistening reflections of the water.

However... this does not the meet the challenge even if I stretch my imagination to breaking point so I'm going to vote it [1] in absence of zero or minus figures. [1]
I mean where the f**k is the Light in this shot?

Seriously - this has been shoe-horned into the challenge. So it's rubbish.
Nothing good about it at all. It's not even worth the pixels that have been gathered to create the perception of contiunous tones. Zeeeeero. Nil. Good luck though - I think you're going to need it with a vaguely appropriate subject such as this...

Beautiful misty light..
Including the figure works very well in my opinion as it adds another focal point and also helps in judging scale and distance.
I`m sure I`ve seen this seascape many times in past challenges..but this version is one of the best so far.

02/04/2005 05:53:43 PM
This is very impressive and deceptively simple. It's a nice scene, which most of us might have dressed up with a strolling or pensive figure in silhouette. A clever few might have thought to make the figure a photographer, perhaps even with a tripod, to more fully embrace this challenge subject. But the spread (human) legs were a rare inspiration, and lift this image way above the usual sunrise/sunset shot. Great work. 9
Second opinion: My prediction for blue ribbon (could be the kiss of death; my top picks usually finish back in the pack!)
  Photographer found comment helpful.
02/04/2005 05:20:16 PM
Your photo leads us as viewers through at least five different light openings, 1) the atmospheric aperture (clouds); 2) the geological aperture (rock formations); 3) the physical aperture of the human body (man's legs); 4) the technological (tripod & camera); and 5) the optical aperture (the unseen eye of the photographer, and eye of the camera). The interplay between the disc of the sun contrasted with the diamond of light formed by the photographer's legs & tripod are brilliant. Clearly evident also is the intensity of focus in the man's stance, to get his large frame into the eye of his camera to do what every photographer attempts to do: set the aperture to capture the impossible, the speed and beauty of light! I love the overlooked shadows of resting birds resting atop the rocks, one to the left and several to the right. An extraordinary photo! 10
