I've been wanting to try a famous "DPC splash," so I thought I'd do it here. I set up a foamcore "house" to bounce the flash off of, then duc-taped the spoon and bottle to barbeque skewers to support them. I knew that there wouldn't be much of a splash from just a couple inches, so I held a syringe (no needle) filled with Pepto about 3 feet above the spoon and dropped a drop, but accuracy is hard doing it that way and releasing the shutter at the same time. The splashes were more like craters (pretty neat effect though) due to the thick consistency of the Pepto. So off to the store and got some Hershey's strawberry milk mix. Came home and mixed to the same "Pepto pink."

Re-set up the shot to get a little closer after seeing the first results. Put a small tube on the syringe and made a small hole in the top foamcore piece. To make the drop more precise, I lined the hole up to the spoon with a fishing line, a nail and gravity to get it as close to the mouth of the bottle, then removed the fishing line. Now it was just shoot, shoot, shoot to get as many splashes as I could to choose from. I got a lot of different kinds of splashes from tiny petite fanned out crowns, to big gloppy ones. This one isn't the prettiest splash, but it gives the effect of the thickness of the Pepto.

Cloned out some tiny spots here and there and a small drip under the mouth of the bottle. Brightness/contrast adjusted. USM. Save for web.

I spent WAY too much time on this, but learned a lot so that's good. Now I'll try some closer shots of splashes.

Lens used: Canon 28-135 IS

Thanks for all the great votes! I really didn't think it would place as high as it did, especially with all the nice photos that were entered. I wanted to do something different with pink, turns out there were like 4 other Pepto shots.

This may be the first frame I have seen that really helps a shot. and it was very good on it's own, but this one ought to finish with a ribbon. great idea well executed.

I'm all for the splash images, but it doesn't look like its splashing from something that came out of the pepto bottle.

The background is a little drab. A pink or yellow one would really make the image pop.

The studio style photo isn't really my thing, but this one is kind of cool. Nice variation on the oh-so-popular water drop concept.

I like this... critique: I would have zoomed in and got a good macro on the spoon and left out the bottle :)

Technically impressive shot...subject matter is a little predictable but it's a good catch.
