Challenge: Surrealism (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Sony Mavica FD-95
Location: Oregon Coast
Date: Mar 3, 2005
Galleries: Abstract, Nature
Date Uploaded: Mar 6, 2005

Took a larger than lifesized puppet from my garage, dressed it up in "priestly" costume, planted the bamboo support poles in the estuary near our home at sunset, set up composition to include sea grass, large ball, dune, horizon line, along with reflection of the surreal priestly blessing; P/S: color balance to enhance purples & to bring out cyan blueness of ball, layers to create dream-like quality, neatimage to dreamscape the surface of the water, USM to finish. Perhaps I pushed the surreal editing too far. DPC doesn't wander very far into digital art through the medium of photography. I thought this challenge might be the place for trial (error?) in pushing this limit a bit more than normally expected. I don't expect this to be voted very high; but I had fun attempting to create a surreal scene which mirrors Dali's classic surreal landscape titled "The Persistence of Memory" (1931).

I don't know why the hell this didn't do better in this challenge, I just came across it for the first time. I'd have given you a top 10 at least.

Was just backtracking through surrealism and realized I hadn't commented upon this stunner, which IMO should have finished int he top 5 for sure. From a purely surrealistic POV it's easily the strongest image in the challenge. Fine work.

This is a wonderfully bizarre image! The message comes through loud and clear, and I just wish I could understand what it's saying. :)

I think this should have scored higher. Good work David!

VERY surreal and very well done with a strange look that fits the challenge perfectly. Excellent entry, thought it would place higher in a challenge called Surrealism!

David: this is an awesome image and you have my warm congratulations because this is an image which, in my opninion, should have finished much, much higher. the title is great and the study is simply outstanding in every way. Keep up the good work. This is your mascot now go and beat it.

My first finish in the "6"s! Amazing! When I unloaded the blessed puppet after the surreal photo shoot, unbeknown to me, the head was lodged behind the seat and I inadvertantly pulled his head right off. Surrealistic finish to a delightful shoot. Thanks for all your kind and helpful comments.

This is completely odd. Colors are a little off. On purpose? focus looks off maybe from sharpenening too much? Not sure. Overall I like it.6

I like this - it fits the surreal theme for me. I think it could be improved slighly if the distracting leaves / whatever were not present in the water in the foreground. Maybe moving a little to the keft woul dhave helped - the water seems clearer there.

After all the work of constructing this sculpture, the photo did not go so well. I think it is primarily the time of day but their is just too much blur. A 5, for the sculpture.

Nice. Looks like a lot of work went into this one. I wish the top wasn't so washed out, but I definitely like the idea and it was overall well executed. Definitely surreal.

Nice use of lens greases or something on the other green bush, as it definitely doesn't look like it's got just basic editing.

I love the set up as well as the choice of location. Works very well. Lighting doesn't quite work for me - a little too bright a sky and too dark a "face" and "hands". Lovely idea and colours. 7

a little bright and too much contrast. Otherwise, a good entry 7

looks like too much noise reduction and the color-cast is a bit strong but I give it a 7 for being very surreal
