Ok, so it's not a Ms. at all... It's Peanut! I dressed him in drag for this challenge. I'm sure he will now have a complex and need tons of pet therapy. Oh well...the things we do in the name of photography!

Update 3-5-07
I am having a really hard time right now...my sweet, beloved chihuahua Peanut was killed this evening after being hit by a car. We aren't sure how he got out of the house, but he did, and as always, ran to the middle of the road for no obvious reason. We are all just devistated. I've held it together for a few hours but now that the house is quiet and the boys are finally asleep, it's really hitting me that he's gone. It's ironic that I can teach coping skills to hundreds of students but now that it's time for me to cope with a loss I can't find a way to handle it. I have many sweet memories of this crazy little dog and nothing will ever replace him in my heart or the hearts of my little boys. I think that's the hardest part for me, is helping them to deal with this loss. They're just completely heartbroken and it kills me to see them hurting so badly. I thought it might make me feel better to post a few pictures i have taken of him over the past three and a half years, but looking at them is really hard for me to do right now. I am glad that the kids didn't witness the event, and that Peanut didn't suffer or even know what hit him...but I do have faith that the idiot blazing down our road at jet speed gets what Karma has to offer him someday.

Rest in peace, little buddy...

Peanut, 12-24-03 - 03-05-07

an excellent pet portrait .. i am so sorry that your gorgeous little dog was killed .. we have a miniature fox terrier, katee .. (the breed was created by crossing fox terrier with chihuahua) .. my daughter wanted a lap dog so we got katee, who is so not a lap dog, altho we didnt know that when she was 6 weeks old ... she is the most active little thing ever & also extremely intelligent .. of course i'd say that being totally biased !! .. its now over five months since your little peanut was taken ... my heart goes out to you even so .. i'm sure five months would't be even close to long enough, for us to 'get over' the loss if anything happened to our little katee .. :)

Laurie,
I am so sorry to hear about Peanut. I know that pets become like our children and losing one is just devastating. You will always have your precious memories and Peanut lives on in your heart. And you have this brilliant portrait of him, even if he is in drag. Hang tough, Laurie! It does get better.
Thinking of you,
Dawn

this photo really made me smile. simply precious! i'm not usually a fan of small dogs, but this shot really makes me want one! fantastic focus. i love the way his eyes come to life and we can see even the tiniest details of his face. the colors are amazing as well. so crisp and bright. they really add to the shot. the black bg makes for an excellent backdrop and makes your little dogs face pop right out of the composition and i have to say the pink really does flatter him (not to mention i'm in love with the o so soft texture of the feathers).

This is an incredible shot. This totally looks like it should be in one of those Chihuahua calendars that you see in the bookstores. Beautifully done. I like it better than the ribbon winners, although they are good, too.

Edit: OK, I just looked at a "professionally" done Chihuahua calendar, and this shot is *way* better than any of those pictures!

Oh, Laurie, this is one of the best ones in the bunch. I am kind of impartial to all chihuahuas, as I have 3 of these wonderful babies at home. Peanut sure is a cutie! The photo is really good. It expresses the gentle warm quality of a chihuahua. Generally, people think of them as yappy annoying dogs, but they really miss the whole point. They are truly one of the loveliest breeds around. Congrats on the great 5th place. It's a winner in my heart!

I think this is just precious, but I have to say a different choice of background color might have improved it. I think white or even a darker pink would have put this one over the top for me. The focus drops off a bit for the eye on the left. sharpening that area would improve as well. Good luck.

This must be your little doggie, Laurie - I recognize her from your portfolio. She looks lovely in pink and I really like the "Glamour Shot" look! The DOF is a bit shallow, the right eye and ear aren't in focus - that might have been what you wanted though. The color is gorgeous.

I don't care for the combination of the pink boa versus the light color of the dog.
Other than that, this is superbly done portrait - wonderful setup, lighting, background, pose etc etc etc. An 8 from me

Oh, here's a winner if I've ever seen one. I'm forced to give this a high score for it's merits even if it is completely ridiculous. :)

What a poor, shameful thing to do to a dog! Poor peanut :( Good lighting, nice blend of colors that stands out against the black background. Soft and yet sharp at the same time. Good details in the face too, which is a very sweet-looking face.
