Those eyes have been in my head..it is the eyes not the chain that make this..a sad story, what a world..

Yes, the dogs plight is unfortunate, no doubt. But whats worse is that the photographer has to suffer beside him!Too bad. Seems your photo was quite popular, not because it showed a dog on a chain, but because it was a moving and thought provoking image. It's a shame folks were scared to score it higher.

This should have placed higher, but this was definitely a brooding, sad, unusual portrait.

The photographer has started this thread to explain the dog, but won't be online for a day and a half, so I am linking it for all who stop here:

Wonderful, brooding image btw. I gave it an 8.

Revisiting for comment. Really great shot--I really love the desaturated tones here. And the light and composition gives it such character. Bumping up!

Looks like one tough customer! You've captured him brilliantly.

Wow, this is one of those images that makes me glad I voted. because if I hadn't, I probably never would have noticed this photo. I like the muted tones and the composition. A very thought provoking image. It's cool, I like it.

Poor dog, why the big chain???

This is my second go around =) - Awh... he doesn't look too happy. Very nice desaturation... I think there should be some more highlights (brighter white)- it looks a little too dull. Otherwise, great job!

This is just sad, while this dog is probably not abused, it apprears to be lonely and unloved. This is the most heartbreaking of the pet portraits. It puts the pampered pets in a different light.

A beautiful image but the chains speak of so much captivity. He is strong and handsome. Bumping up.

Cool shot.

Oh, the poor baby! All chained up :( And he looks pretty ticked off! It's a great candid shot but doesn't come off with the portrait flair. The light and overall composition works well with this shot but the conditions surrounding dog do influence how I feel about the shot. The shap metal roof, the short, short chain make me feel sorry for the puppy. If this was just about any other challenge besides a portrait challenge this would score higher but as is, a 5

This is just a beautiufl piece. I love the light and the tonal range. Such a telling portrait. Very well done and technically sound. Maybe a bit brighter around the face, but I love it anyway. So real. :o)

This is one great photo! I love so much about it. The CHAIN! You could tow a boat with that! The look on his face! That weathered dog house. That war wound on his leg. That giant old tin bowl. So much mood here! Great job. It's like a movie in a picture. Is this really your dog? If it is, I wonder what YOU look like since owners and their dogs look similar. :)

He looks angry lol. I really like this shot, and the coloring of it, though it doesn't really say portrait to me, more of a candid moment, still nice though.

A really well done photo - the lighting is perfect and love the eyes - but I think I would have liked it better if he was in a cuddlier position - without the chain. 7

This is very unusual and frightening in a way...but it's an excellent shot and very very effective, as is the title..well done with the chain, rebar rod and shabby doghouse all adding to the mood of this portrait..8 I'll stay out of that yard!

The title sure doesn't convey the same feeling/message as the photo. While this is technically a good photo, I would say this fella looks kinda miserable.

I like the overall monotone theme of the shot. The dog presents personality, especially coupled with his/her surroundings. The title is interesting. To me the image depicts more 'beware of the dog' than 'family' dog.
