Again, thanks so much for all the comments. I especially want to thank Di Weishaupt for taking time to review my picture.

To address some of the comments. Indeed, I have to apply a strong sharpening mainly because it was 100% crop from the original picture. The water was not exactly that green as it appeared on the picture. I did not plan to change the color, but it changed after all the corrections with levels, shadow/highlight, contrast, etc. The real color is close to what is in my other picture on the same topic (see post below).

And regarding where I was. I did not plan to go into the water but I had to get closer. So, eventually I was waist-deep into the ocean :)

First of all Congratulations on your 3rd place ribbon!

I like the composition, the wave breaking and his position on the wave are extremely eye catching and difficult to catch.

The color is slightly off in the water, the top of the wave on the right is almost a Kelly green along with the green in the wall of the wave. If you compare the color in this photograph to one of your other photographs

that appears to be taken at the same time, you see what I mean.

On the right side, over the water, it appears that you may have over-sharpened slightly. The noise there takes my eye to it almost immediately after I notice the surfer.

All in all, though, this is a beautiful photograph and earned youa well deserved ribbon!

why is the water green? isn't it the ocean?

Okay, I have to ask, was the water really that green or did you tweak it somehow to get it that way? That seems like it would difficult to do, But I live near the ocean and I've seen the water many different shades, including greens, just not anything like that. Of course the ocean I live near is the Gulf of Mexico, but still . . .

Great shot BTW!

P.S. Where you on the water or on land?

Thanks so much for nice comments! My first ribbon!

I used Canon 28-135 IS at 135mm and still had to make almost 100% crop. Too bad I didn’t have yet a new 70-200 f4 which arrived just one day after I took this shoot.

Aersome surfing shot! These shots are really hard to expose for, because you can lose detail in the shadow areas. The face is still a tad dark, but you can make it out. Very nicely done! 7

nice picture, excess splash, however the angle or motive behind the surfer is lacking. surfing is very much in the moment and the viewer (at least this one) isn't there with him.

Great color - focus is awesome. One small thing - the best surfing pictures generally have the crop leading in the direction of the surfer. That is, the action is moving from the white part of the wave to the part that hasn't broken yet, so the crop usually less of the breaking wave than the about-to-break part. Nevertheless, this is a great shot!
