Challenge: Abandoned Buildings (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Spring Bluff County Forest Preserve
Date: Apr 12, 2005
Aperture: 6.7
ISO: 1/125
Shutter: 1600
Galleries: Nature, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Apr 12, 2005

Am noting a metaphor between people or businesses abandoning a building and the spirit (anima) abandoning a building.

Found this poor coyote dead in her/his tracks yesterday while biking through a forest preserve, perhaps poisoned by a nearby town dweller who feared for their pets. Went back this morning to get the picture.

Hmm, in response to my last comment. I really have no idea what I was thinking. Sorry.

I am astounded that this is last place out of almost 500 entries. I really expected the brown ribbon to be a ridiculous picture, but I think this one would be justified in being in, say, the top 20%.

Wow. I'm actually speechless.

Its funny how they "dog" you for a photo of a dead coyote. I guess its only ok to take pictures of dead bugs.(even if you have to kill them yourself)

i'm not feeling the abandoned BUILDING theme here, but this is still a good shot.
04/19/2005 06:35:16 PM
is that a dead dog???!!
04/19/2005 04:08:58 PM
I don't particularly care for pictures of dead animals but I have not scored this low for that reason. There is no building, as such it doesn't meet the challenge at all.
04/19/2005 09:35:49 AM
Interesting take on the challenge.
04/18/2005 10:46:37 PM
Creative. I like it when people take chances. The sharpness is nice, and so is the cropping.
04/18/2005 08:43:17 PM
I just don't know what to say here... so sad... I hope this was stumbled upon and not killed for sport.
04/18/2005 03:16:53 PM
It's gross, but it's not a bad pic. :-)
04/18/2005 12:07:02 PM
If the topic had been "Abandoned Homes", I could understand this. Buildings is a bit more precise, though, and although it is a good photograph, it is off-topic.

I understand your "theme", but I don't like it. I gave you 1 at first, but bumping to 3 because it's technicaly ok.
04/16/2005 07:13:51 PM
I get the dead animal's "body thing as a vessel", but have a difficult time correlating it to an "abandoned building". Sorry.
04/16/2005 07:35:24 AM
Sorry, wrong challange
04/15/2005 07:25:51 PM
I can't see any abandoned building in this photo, so it doesn't meet this challenge IMHO. Nice shot though!
04/15/2005 06:17:30 AM
Which part of "Abandoned Buildings" Confused you???? Instant 1, congrats!
04/14/2005 05:56:38 PM
an animal has never been a building... sorry
04/14/2005 01:25:29 PM
poor dead fox. But I don't see a building. Captured the texture of the fur well...
04/14/2005 12:02:30 PM
Unusual take on this challenge. That aside, it's hard to make out much detail on this picture. The subject blends into the grass. Perhaps increasing the contrast would help.

I understand the idea but for me it wasn't the best way to express the challenge. I am increasing my original vote though becuase technically it is a well photographed image.

04/14/2005 10:27:29 AM
Sad....
04/14/2005 09:24:25 AM
is this you bear?.. outside of the box is OK but I think it help if the box is atleast somewhere in sight... This is a bit of a streatch for me as far as abondoned buildings go..
04/14/2005 08:19:27 AM
Took me a sec. to understand the point of the photo and I doubt you ill score very hi in this challenge but most definiately a unique perspective on this challenge. Excellent clarity and contrast and love the B&W conversion. Well done and good luck in this challenge. <9> My highest scoring photo yet. congrats.

I gave this a low score because I don't feel the image fits the challenge as an abandoned building.
04/13/2005 10:25:11 PM
Interesting take on the challenge - and sad.
04/13/2005 09:58:56 PM
building??? what possessed you to submit this?
04/13/2005 08:55:20 PM
I understand that you're thinking out of the box, but I think maybe this is a little too far out of the box. On the plus side, the composition is good, lighting ok, clarity fantastic. Is this a fox or a dog? Bumping up to 4.

I know death happens, but I bet a lot of folks here won't be into this...
04/13/2005 02:06:19 PM
very original interperetation of the challenge...
04/13/2005 10:56:31 AM
I get it but I don't think many will...sometimes being different can be like shooting yourself in the foot depending on your peers. I do wish I could see the entire ear though.

This is not a building .......
04/13/2005 07:47:50 AM
residential or commercial?
04/13/2005 06:49:41 AM
Interesting concept. I suspect this will not do well, as many people will be disturbed by the image, and not understand it's meaning. Good luck

I'm all for creativity; this isn't it.

The word 'building' can only be used to describe a body in badly written poetry and in some religious tracts and even those specifically refer to a 'temple'.
04/13/2005 03:19:17 AM
What is that... I mean, it's a nice photo technically (nice value, range of whites and blacks) but I can't even tell what it is. Some kind of dead animal... A wolf?

That's a really sad picture but an interresting take on the subject. I suspect it will do poorly in the contest because of the nature of the shot, which is too bad. I like the fact that it is cropped closely, it makes it more "intimate".

Poor little thing, I wondered what happened to it?

Where is the building? This may be more appropriate for a "carcus" challenge... sorry.
04/13/2005 12:14:24 AM
Interesting take on the theme, although a little too morbid for me.
