This homeless person had settled down for the night on the doorstep of a London Accountants.

Handheld with IS 17-85 lens.

it was his seemingly contended smile that juxtaposed the situation which struck me most.

The smile does make the image. Don't care for the tones but the smile is priceless.

Thanks Hugh - you've been through the same decision/critique process as me! Very helpful, and I'm glad you've seen what I saw. The 'bag-like image' is his reflection in a brass facia (visible clearly when large).

This image was particularly difficult due to image size. The detail in his face when large is great, but at this size the photo looks quite bland.

Hello from the Critique Club,
What a great photo to critique!

Composition: The most striking thing is that half the image contains little detail, just stairs - but that is just right, it emphasises the hard life and the hard ground that the subject is experiencing. The rest of the image is a bit busy but again that supports the image - the contrast between warmth and light inside against the cold outside. The smile on the subjects face is just superb and contrasts so effectively with my view of this ay of life. Maybe you could lose some of the stairs but I doubt that it would improve the image. Cropping the right side out would perhaps stop me wondering what the bag-like image is centre right but you would lose the handrail which would be a pity

Focus: Just right - this needed a reasonable deph of field to emphasise both subject and the juxtaposed background. The subject is well lit and beautifully sharp.

Exposure; Just right, shadows and highlights well under control and supporting the mood.

Challenge: Spot on challenge - an excellent capture!

Overall: Great image - so why didn't it do better? Perhaps it doesn't have quite enough of that intangible wow! factor but still a result of which you should be proud.

Hugh

I am shocked this didn't finish in at least the top 10. It says more about people..wow..I just don't get it. This picture says something, and makes me think. A truly wonderful shot!

Thanks for the comments - and you're right Skip, it was never going to score highly because of the subject.

very nicely seen, jon. while i would have liked to have seen this finish higher, my guess is that this is one of those images that most people would prefer not to dwell on.

Can't say that he looks comfortable but he does look pleased. Lighting is very nice

I walk over a lot of homeless in Toronto. I always wonder why they live the way they do. This shot brings that to mind. [10]

I had a similar idea -- you pulled it off well. Feels a little off horizontal to the right.

Is it my imagination or does he look like Robin Williams? Emotional shot - good job!

How did you get Robin Williams to pose for you? I really like it. A poor man smiling, it shows you that you can be happy even if your broke. Hope... I like it. Nice!

Is that Robin Williams? What was that movie . . . Fisher King?

I like the composition of this shot..especially the stairs leading to the main figure..it is very effective; almost dividing the frame into two sections...8

very nice. I'd love to see a close-up of this guy, he seems to have a little grin on his face.

Gotta love this one, daring composition and strangely bizzare subject. Kinda the antithesis of Zoomdak's separation shot, LOL.

Good capture, but I would have gone with a tighter cropping

Nice lighting, but the framing is distracting to me. I might crop out some of the stairs.
