great image, but another, less visible achievement was the score. It is exactly the same as a very very similar older photo by kiwiness

Avg (all users): 7.498 both.

I don't mean you copied it (even if you did your picture still deserved the blue), I'm just perplexed by the coincidence :-o

Very tacktical photographing here. The green was an excellent choice of colour for this. I don't think any other colour would have done quite as well. Kudos for that title too. I'm most fascinated by the way the water (Assuming that is your liquid of choice..) splashed up in the back, in a quasi-serpentine way. Congrats on 1st place.

Greetings from the Critique Club!
"The sign of a photographer: Take a mundane subject and turn it into art"

This was an unusual challenge in that the object was to take an ordinary household object and create an interesting photograph from it, all within in a time frame of 24 hours.

Composition:
Your image was a unique and very imaginative one that thrilled the viewers and voters. There is dropping a tack into fluid, then there is the tranquil method - with PUNCH! This shot has a lot going for it in the way of punch: The colors are vivid and well chosen. The angular trajectory kept this from being a boring shot, as the eye is drawn not only to where the tack is now, but the mind can easily re-trace where it entered the fluid, and yet does not compete with the main focal point. The depth of field falls off at the right point in the image in my opinion, keeping the focal point in one place.
Interest, wow factor and the tranquil punch all added up to this being THE 24-hour challenge winner, and well-deserved at that.

Lighting:
How much can be said about the lighting here that the image doesn't say for itself? It rocks and was the key element in taking this shot right to the top. Well-balanced with just the right amount of contrast.

Post-Processing:
You have a good handle on your post-processing in this picture. You didn't go off the deep end in the saturation and as easy as this may have been to go over the top with an unusual border, you chose the simple approach, and was effective in being supplemental to the overall look/feel.

Suggestions/Improvements:
I think after studying this for a while, I have found I have nothing to suggest in ways to improve this image within the open challenge editing guidelines.

Congrats on a very fine job and on the Blue Ribbon Lee!

I hope this was useful to you, and please feel free to contact me via PM if you have any questions regarding this critique or anything else relating to the site in general.

Regards,
Brad

Congrats for a great work with a tack! I really love your pic. I think green colour was an interested choice to this pic. Furthermore, I really like the reflection of the tack in the upper left. Focus is good, too. And, composition is very original. Overall, you deserved very well this ribbon. Added to my favourites. Congrats

VERY cool...maybe it's just the refraction from the water, but the tack looks a bit bent. Otherwise, an awesome shot! 9 from me!

Despite the fact that I'm getting a bit tired of seeing photos of glasses of various colors of water, I do think this is a stunning photo. The green is such a strong green, like green Jello and the composition of showing only a portion of the glass and placing it to one side adds to the photo's strengh. The tack cutting through the water doesn't really make sense, logically, but who cares, it creates a focal point that is powerful in its movement into the water. The splash created is gorgeous. Great job! 9

Finally! An image that stands out from the rest of the challenge. No offense to anyone really but this challenge IMO has been terrible so far and I donĀ“t think I have ever given out so many scores of 5 or lower. Anyway, love pretty much everything about this shot except that maybe the DOF could have been bigger to include the drops in the backround that fade out but this is just nitpicking. The first 10 I gave this challenge, hope you do well.

The fluid, glass, and background are ideally realized. I wonder if you considered using a clear or shiny metallic tack. Perhaps that would make the photo a little more confusing, but the muddy red color of this tack strikes me as being completely inconsistent with the visual qualities of the rest of the photo. I know it should be a quibble, but the tack is the 'focal point' of the photo and if it is not pretty, it's like a long joke with no

Ther had to be a "splash" entry to round out the "classic themes" reprisal aspect of this challenge, and here it is. Nicely done, a littlke shy on the DOF. I love the way the slight arc of the tack's point has created its own, mini-event down there.
