Yes, I know, it's allready been done.
Credit goes to (In order of exposure date): Steve McCurry, Kiwiness and Librodo

3 of my favorites by 3 of my favorite Photographers, I know it's not even 10% that good, but it was not intended to go into the challenges.

Model is Natacha, it's her idea, so blame her, she can take it, she's almost 9.
I intended to do something different for this challenge, but as I was looking true some of Manny's photo's, Natacha said, she wanted " a photo like that one" (Eyes 2) and when I reviewed it, I decided to send this one in.
Thank you Manny for being such a great inspirator and thanks for al of your help.

Wow...what can I say that 120+ people didn't already say?
The first thing I notice about it is that it seems very speckled. Oversharpened? I love the shot and it is very detailed and visually appealing.
Great focus and lighting. The left (her right) gets a tad bright, but it does not distract from the photo at all. Actually, it could even be a plus.
The hair in the face is a little strong, but not distracting. The eyes are captivating.
Not really much that I can add...simply wonderful. ~Heather~

Manny,

I will be in Thailand in a few (2-4) months, just don't go to the Philipines like you did last year :)
I realy need the break by the way, it's a shame that I did not win a roundtrip Bankok with this photo.

Thanks again mr. Teacher :-b

Sorry, it wouldn't let me add this as a favorite again (since I already had done so).... Great job and congratulations on your blue ribbon!!

And I scored this highly because it is nice - even though you have been exceedingly mean to me with your comments in the past. Maybe you can learn from Mannie how a true gentleman behaves.

Thank you all for voting and commenting.
This week has been a rush, with my score going up and down.
I am extremely happy with my first ribbon, and the color isn’t that bad either, matches the shawl nicely.

I want to say something about some of the comments I got:

First: Docktornick, could you post some pictures of you eating your D1?
Second: The white in the eyes is not dodged, it’s really white. I will post some pictures in the forum later to show you.

Then I have to thank a few people:
Librodo, thank you for motivating, and believing in me.
Thanks for all the help you gave me and your positive and constructive comments from the moment I tried portraits. You know this blue belongs only half to me, the other half is yours!

Kiwiness for inspiration and Anastasia for your comments.

Last but not least osari for getting me back in photography 2 years ago.

This is the most outstanding picture in the whole challenge ... those eyes, so deep they seem to be cutting your heart in half; and those colours that grab your attention and doesn't let you go.

Great color and contrast, super job ... stay away from the plastic faces so many use.

04/24/2005 01:05:24 AM
Captivating eyes. After looking at it for some time, I think I find the major strand of hair falilng over the nose to be distracting more than adding anything to the shot. That's my only nitpick. I really like the lighting and the focus/expression are right on.

As ever, the direct look into the camera is powerful, but I don't know much about this girl from the photo. Yes, she's lovely to look at, but I get no emotion for the shot. Of course the composition is technically sound but I feel that I would gain more from viewing her candidly, going about her business, unaware of the intrusion into her world.

On a technical point (apart from your obvious ability) the shot is way over sharpened or NeatImaged (it's very noisy around the eyebrows) but I love the colour. Not sure about the title.

04/20/2005 04:08:04 PM
A haunting look and an ideal crop. The angle is very effective, with the eyes looking up and out of the shawl. One little thing I don't like is that the dodging of the eyes seems to have removed some detail .
But overall, a very very effective image. Let's see if the shawl matches a certain ribbon color :)
PS: I know who's picture this is, or librodo has found a successor :)

04/18/2005 03:07:23 PM
A great, expressive shot and sure to do well. This is the first time I won't openly say this is Librodo because there is one other shot in this challenge that is good enough to be his.

Some nit-picks for what they are worth: I get the sense that this photo may have been over-sharpened a bit. The eyes may have been whitened just a tad too much as well. If not, they are the whitest eyes in the world.

Aside from that? Love it. The color and textures of the shawl are beautiful, as is the strand of hair over the face. Fantastic job.

eyes of the girl tell fear and lonelyness, but for me that is what the shot makes so faszinating

Manny,

Nice shot! Love the vivid color of the blue and the detail in the skin. I think you over processed her eyes a bit. I remmeber you talking about a new technique you were trying with the whites of the eyes....and I think it looks a little "too" white and fake.

Love the strip of hair in front of the face and the detail of the fabric.

This is the first pic in this challenge I've voted on and commented on. I scanned the thumbs to find yours first cause I was excited :)

Keep up the great work!

Oh I wonder whose shot this is? It brings to mind questions of style, content, experimentation, At what point does such a fixed-seeming approach become rather humdrum? I admire your single-mindedness, and at the same time I wonder at the lack of variety of approach - have you truly found your perfect approach to your vision? I don't know ...

Of course, it goes without saying all the necessary compliments on the technical prowess. And I'm sure you'll win this challenge.

And just in case it isn't Manny - well, it's the most profound imitation one could imagine.

I'm thinking you went a little overboard when it comes to dodging the eyes. Otherwise a really nice portrait and probably a contender in this challenge. Great subject, and a nice use of light.

This is overall excellent! Very Librodo-esque capture (my apologies if you are not familiar with his work, or if you are indeed Librodo).

My only complaint with this photograph is a tad bit of overexposure on the right cheek (left side of photo) and the obvious processing effects in the top right corner (mainly, lack of grain evident elsewhere in the picture - my guess would be that it was gaussian-blurred).

These two issues result in a score of 9. Well done!

It's a beautiful image - incredible eyes and great lighting. However I think it's oversharpened, the eyes are overwhitened, and the cloning for strays could've been cleaner (left of nose, forehead, etc). Also, top right corner could've been worked better. When the challenge is over, I'd love to see the original. Even without all the processing I'm sure it has plenty of heart.

It's a good attempt at a re-creation. Just a little over-exposed on the left, and very noisy(either from sharpening or ISO or both). Without those things you could have convinced me. :)

should score pretty well.

Simply stunning. This has to be a ribbon I think. Reminds me (as does another in this challenge) of a very famous National Geographic photo of the Afgan woman.
