Love these little fellas - I bred them once. Had about 50 babies pouncing around trying to eat each other, so I ahd to separate them ASAP! Most survived too and I gave them away to various keepers of odd critters.

Aren't their eyes hypnotic.

Looks like he makes good model too - of course, being very still!

Mucho congratulations on your first ribbon. This is just beautifully composed. That's actually quite rare in bug macros. And I love the way the triangle (its face) is so understaed, yet still obvious. Fine work!

Whoooo!! wow.. thaks for all the great comments..

Was fun shooting this mantis actaually... just simple macro whilst holding a peice of white paper behind him.. had a bit of a battle.. several times he grabbed the lens and gave me a scare from the behind the magnifaction of the viewfinder... anyway, stoked to have a top 3!

Cheers, Tim

Good color, great composition and well conceived depth of field. Terrific all the way around. Kudos to you for a fantastic capture. One of the best in this challenge and should be in the running for a ribbon.

The only improvement might be to try and remove the SLIGHT haloing around the right eye, antennae and left leg. With this image that would be very easy to do.

I really like this little insect - very cute. The colors are very bold...love the red mouth.
As for the focusing, at first I thought I would have liked to see less blur of the body, but soon realized that is what makes this fit the theme so well. The blurring of the body makes the head really stand out.

the DOF draws attention to the triangles here but i feel i wouldve iked this better if the entire critter was in focus.the body blurr is distracting to me. :o)7
