Critique Club Comments:

First of all, the goal of photography is to "inspire", and this shot certainly does fulfill that goal.

Creativity: This is a very creative shot of a subject that has been photographed literally millions of times. The cropping and zoom are excellent.

Aesthetics: For a photograph to be compelling, it has to be something you want to look at, and keep looking at. Again, this image succeeds. I can easily see this hanging in the lobby or waiting room of a corporate office building.

Furthermore, there are no items in photograph that "don't belong" It is very common for a great shot to be reduced to an average shot, because there is something in the shot that is "distracting". The viewer can't enjoy the image, because there are one or more things in the image that are distracting. Again, no problems here. The subject is simple and clean and there are no "hot spots", dust spots, etc.

Technical Details:
Finally, you can have a great subject, perfect conditions and timing, and still end up with an average shot if you don't understand the science of photography (lighting, depth of field, etc.)

I don't see any technical issues with this shot. It is well lit and sharply focused.

Possible improvements:
If I were to play with image at all, I would try two things. First I would burn the eyes a little to see if I couldn't get some the details of the iris' to come out. Second, I would dodge the top of the beak a little to bring out the richness and contrast. I will send you a PM of these two edits as an example.

Conclusion:
Great shot. Congratulations on your first first blue ribbon.

I agree with riot. I think the compostion is perfect and adds to the overall photographic striking quality of this picture. To me, it's the perfect shot, and couldn't be improved on in any way!!! I'm still amazed by it every time I see it!!! I want to try to get a capture like this. It blows me away.

Really? Because that was intentional, and supposed to enhance the drama of the triangle... hmm

The squareness of the frame detracts from the nature (the type) of the subject. With this type of subject, I'd like to see a more rounded composition with depth.

My comment is made not in terms of the challenge goals, but in terms of the general photographic quality of the subject and the manner in which it was presented (composed).

Great shot... I would mention the light, focus, incredible sharpness, composition, etc. etc. But we both know it's all good. Good luck ! You probably don't need luck, but just in case, it would be a shame not to see this get a ribbon.

It might be just a touch oversharpened, but this is an excellent, high quality image. I hope the triangle in this image is apparent enough to voters to give it the high score it deserves.

How the heck did you get so close to this mean bird???
  Photographer found comment helpful.
05/17/2005 01:27:11 PM
After voting on about a third of these already, this shot is by far the front runner. Excellent photo. If I had something to complain about it would be lack of a catchlight in the eyes. However, given the closeness to the bird (telephoto or not) he probably would have been pissed by a flash and bit your nose off.

Great photo. Beautiful capture of feather detail. Perfect DOF. I looks like there are some sharpening artifacts on the beak. Too bad you couldn't use advanced editing to remove them. Among my tip picks and a likely ribbon winner.

This is maybe a crop from a bigger photo to this competion? The pic is skillfully made. The sharpness is not in eyes but it still works! My favourite to the 1st place of this competion.

This will do well, especially considering the nature of DPC. I like this a lot, congratulations on a top capture. This is an 8 for me, although I don't really like the subject I think this is a great shot nonetheless. Nice one.
