Challenge: Lighting II (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Location: My Kitchen, Montreal, Qc
Date: May 19, 2005
Aperture: F 8.0
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/25 sec
Galleries: Still Life, Macro
Date Uploaded: May 19, 2005

Just fooling around with my Tamron 28-75 XR Di f/2.8. I am just more amazed by this lens every day. WOW! It does macro too!

Shot handheld @ 75mm. Distance to subject was about 6-7 inches from the front of the lens.

Lighting was just my kitchen lighting (neons) mounted under the counter and also in the BG. The dandylions were picked by my kids earlier in the day.

Processed from RAW file to 16-bit tiff. No exposure adjustment.

In PS7: did as much adjustemt as possible in 16 bit.

- crop
- auto level
- lomo action (outer dark edge, brightness/contrast only. I stopped the action)
- played with outer edge layer and erased sections that darkened the flower.
- masked out a little of the contrast layer to bring back the detail around the base of the flower
- flattened and dodged and burned a little to get smooth background lighted area.
- USM
- resized
- USM again
- border
- save for web

I really like this image. Although the BG lighted area is a little off-center, I don't want to reshoot this to try to get it better. I never intended for it to be an entry to DPC. I was just testing the limits of the lens. I like that spontanaety (sp?) of it.

This was one of my favorites. I'm glad to see it made the top 10. I just read the info you left on the picture and am curious... what is "lomo action"?

Neat picture of a dandy, but for me this doesn't meet the challenge...the light doesn't seem to be a key factor here...the flower is.

Makes it look like a flower (instead of the weed we all know it is!) Your use of light to punctuate the shot makes this a stand-out. One of my ribbon picks.

One of the best in the challenge. I really like lighting both from above and in the background. The profile view works well with the lighting you choose. The choice of background and border is very fitting. -10

Nice shot. Good lighting, crop, border, frame. The white light in the background seems oddly shaped. It was actually the first thing that I noticed, and my eyes keep getting pulled away from the yellow to the white. Maybe a gradual gradient from dark to light would work too.

I would find this more attractive if it had more depth of field so that the entire dandelion was in focus

Yes, light is a subject here. You composition is just great as is your lighting.

It's fun to see something that you usually associate with dylight in this dramatic lighting. I also like the angle you chose, it makes the flower more mysterious.
