A homeless man on the way to his current abode under the freeway. Although there's a large patch of light, it is fenced-off and forbidden to him ...

I can see where you're coming from with the title and the connection to darkness...it's unfortunate that the average DPC voter doesn't make the kinds of connections necessary to do so in an average 2 second viewing. The large patch of light is enough for most to say "DNMC" and click the 4 or below. I like the composition; the left side feels a bit crowded from the pillar running along there. I think if you had shot it at twilight, a step or so more to your right, this image would have scored higher for you. :)

Alone, it's a good photo, but coupled with the other dark photos of this challenge, it didn't really stand out much. However, I think it deserved better than a 3.8. That's just silly! :)

Thanks. I thought that one patch of darkness, especially with that bright line leading straight to it, would be enough "physical darkness" to qualify.

The far more important connection to the topic is the metaphorical one, that in the richest and most powerful country in the world, able-bodied men are reduced to sleeping under freeways. The houses up the street, less than 100 feet away, are selling for over a half-million dollars.

The model is too centered... and the weeds almost overtake the boy in terms of importance in the scene.

Can't see how this meets the challenge as the shadows aren't very deep. Odd bit of lens flair on there was well. 2
