I don't understand MandarinElements comments (although she's entitled to her opinion). This is an excellent shot! The lighting is fabulous, the hair coming down on the face, the pose, the expression; it all works so well. Someday I'll be able to shoot this well (I hope!). Wonderful job!!

A definite 10 in my book. Fantastic portrait.

I think this photo was very nice, but I don't think it was that interesting. It seems just like a picture of someone, I mean it doesn't seem like there's anything special about it. Maybe if you had something happening, have her hold something, have more shadows, a darker backround, maybe something in front of her but not blocking her way, eh? Maybe it could seem as if a person was looking at her through a window

One of every ribbon now, eh? Great job :)

Constance, great photo and congrats on third! This was one of my 10s this week :)

This would have been much better if you had been able to keep some detail in the highlights. It would still have been possible to have the light airy mood. I like the tight cropping around the face. The lighter area with hair strands behind the head is distracting, the crop could have eleminated that without unbalancing the image.
06/02/2002 09:22:00 PM
well done
06/02/2002 01:58:00 AM
Nice portrait
06/01/2002 10:46:00 PM
This looks very professional only thing wrong with it is that the fabric on her knee fades away into the light as well as the detail on the edges of her hands
05/31/2002 08:22:00 PM
On my monitor it loses the highlights on the far right; otherwise I like it a lot.
05/31/2002 09:41:00 AM
Nicely done. I'm guessing some people won't like the overexposure on the right, but it works for me. I've looked for suggestions to offer, and simply can't find any. So there ya are.
05/31/2002 01:48:00 AM
Very, very beautiful. The lighting and soft, (slightly tinted?) black and white are very delicate. I love it.
05/31/2002 12:40:00 AM
The hair strands and the composition are perfect. I know people have already mentioned the blown out areas and maybe you went a little too far with it. But I really love it regardless, one of the best portrait shots I have seen in a long time.
05/31/2002 12:21:00 AM
nice lightning
05/30/2002 08:57:00 PM
Nice picture. A little bright/washed out on the right side -- some detail is lost. Otherwise, I think it is an excellent shot.
05/30/2002 06:54:00 PM
I like the pose and the expression. her hand and her dress though, seem to blend in with the white background (at least on this monitor). while I like how the curve of the piece of hair mirrors the curve of her cheekbone and jawline, it bothers me that it's in front of her eye. Of coourse, it gives it a more casual feeling, but I think pushing it to the other side of her eye would have made a difference.

The Best One So Far!!
05/30/2002 03:46:00 PM
I like the dramatic lighting, but would have liked to see more detail in the highlights.
05/30/2002 08:26:00 AM
Well...I think we all know this is goood self portrait photography. Interested to know how you got such nice lighting. I tend to get harsher shadows but I don't have any studio lights yet and depend on a lot of natural, one directional window light.

One of my 10 best.
05/30/2002 08:14:00 AM
this is a great portrait. some might say that the right side is overexposed or blown out, but i think it works nicely in this shot. good job.
05/30/2002 06:09:00 AM
very pretty model. love the hair, the lighting, the soft focus, the b&w. 10.
05/29/2002 06:31:00 PM
Beautiful portrait. Love the overexposed whites in the background.
05/29/2002 05:22:00 PM
This is a lovely portrait. I like how the face is so sharp and everything beyond her face fades into the light.
05/29/2002 05:11:00 PM
Very nice...
05/29/2002 04:42:00 PM
Very moody! I like it!
Beautiful catch lights in the eyes. Works wonders in B&W.
05/29/2002 03:10:00 PM
This is an exquisite portrait photograph... I believe that the minor glisten in her eyes really sets this one off.. I love it and I'm giving it a 10 for a job well done. 10 means VERY GOOD right? This is better than VERY GOOD but I want to make a critique anyway... I like the lighting tones across her faceis very nice and I like the deviation of light tones from one side of the hair streak to the other... However, I believe the light on the right side of the frame is a little 'hot' and her fingers and dress are washing out quite a bit. I also really appreciate the mild sepia tone that has been applied to this image. It makes it MUCH warmer feeling than a standard black and white... GREAT JOB!
05/29/2002 02:39:00 PM
grayscale and natural lines/curves create a very pleasing portrait
05/29/2002 10:47:00 AM
gorgeous gal, gorgeous photo ... nuff said
05/29/2002 10:45:00 AM
A very nice portrait. The background is so washed out on the right side and even effects her dress, but the rest is so nice, I don't know what I could suggest to improve....maybe change your lighting a bit.

Very nice photo. Seems a bit too washed out lower right, maybe less hair in front of her eye, and the 'hole' in her ear (maybe an earring next time) but she is too pretty not to make it a great photo. Good job.
05/29/2002 06:46:00 AM
Very good photo. My only problem is the level of light. Not sure if you were attempting high-key or not. My opinion is that it is not bright enough for high-key effect, but otherwise too bright. especially the forward arm-wrist-hand. Still gets a 9, but I think I would have given a 10 if either purposely "high-key"ed or darkened up some.
05/29/2002 01:06:00 PM
A beautiful portrait, 10.
05/28/2002 07:27:00 PM
Great use of shadow, interesting composition
05/28/2002 05:21:00 PM
Lovely....
Nice drama in her eyes.
05/28/2002 05:03:00 PM
Such a sweet smile on a very pretty face. Nice pose. In my top 10.
05/28/2002 04:13:00 PM
Nice portrait. Elicits a lot of nice emotions. Sweet. It would make a customer very happy to pass down to generations.
05/28/2002 03:53:00 PM
very nice look. Beautiful eyes.
05/28/2002 03:40:00 PM
Very nice. Good balance, well composed.
05/28/2002 11:54:00 AM
Amazing job creating the softness on the right side of the image and still having beautiful tones on the left.
05/28/2002 11:02:00 AM
she'd be beautiful in any month ;) The only thing I would change would be to thin out the tendril (sp?) of hair in front of her eye, otherwise great photo.
05/28/2002 08:51:00 AM
too much hair in front of her face I think. Good light in her eyes though.
05/28/2002 08:02:00 AM
Great exposure and composure. The b/w tones work very well.
05/28/2002 02:48:00 AM
Very nice portrait. The lighting a little bright on her hands IMO, but still one of my top 10 picks for the week.
05/27/2002 11:05:00 PM
Beautifully done. The high-key falls apart a little inthe ULHC - maybe a reflector would have helped with the shadows behind that strand of hair and on her neck. Biggest little nit is that you've lost half a finger to overexposure. High marks from me.
05/27/2002 08:42:00 PM
Fantastic photo! I wish the white was not so stark on the right side, but otherwise excellent.
05/27/2002 08:27:00 PM
Well, it ALWAYS helps to have a gorgeous subject
05/27/2002 06:47:00 PM
good photo
05/27/2002 04:54:00 PM
pretty gurl. like the cropping. some may say something about the overexposure but i like it.
05/27/2002 04:52:00 PM
Good composition, pose, light and love the b&w. She's a lovely _people_ and you did a good job.
05/27/2002 12:41:00 PM
great title! very nice composition.
05/27/2002 09:11:00 AM
well done
05/27/2002 09:06:00 AM
Nice hair and eyes.
05/27/2002 07:22:00 AM
This is a very pretty photograph. Nice expression and pose.
05/27/2002 07:00:00 AM
great person, great pose, great lighting, great colorand tones... great photo!
05/27/2002 02:46:00 AM
Very nice photo ! The color is great for such a soft effect. The title is well thought out as well.
05/27/2002 01:43:00 AM
Beautiful eyes. Like the lighting, separation from background and wistful/ urchin feel to the subject.
The shadowing is good to a point. The 2 tone face is a bit uncomfortable.
05/27/2002 12:57:00 AM
Clever Title, stunning model, great photo.
05/27/2002 12:28:00 AM
could use a tad more contrast but well done
05/27/2002 12:05:00 AM
Let me be the first to comment on how absolutely beautiful this composition is. I absolutely love it. The lighting is superb. I'll have to write more about this when I can...right now, I'm just amazed at how wonderful this shot is. (Later) Ok, I know why I really like it (aside from the lovely subject), you managed to capture this persons humanity. As someone told me, anyone can capture beauty with people, but you somehow have to also capture their humanity. Bravo!
05/27/2002 12:02:00 AM
this reminds me of a photo that would come with a frame. this is cool
