Again, trying to think a little outside of the box. Any ballet dancer will tell you they can't live without their pointe shoes, and each dancer has their own unique routine to personalize or 'break in' their shoes. I found the sepia tone to give the photo more character, and I used contrast to increase the shadows. I couldn't get rid of the highlight along the wrist w/o spot editing. If anyone knows how, please tell me!

Edit:
Thanks to all who voted and gave me great comments.

To those who say I DNMC, I think I did. A dancer's tools are first and foremost, their body. In the case of female classical ballet dancers, their pointe shoes are an essential tool.

This was taken on a windowsill to get the best use of natural light.

Oh yes, and thanks to Kosmikkreeper for inspiring me to pick up the camera after the photshoot he did in Montreal a couple months ago. To bad I didn't make more money on the shoot to pay for my new camera :D

Thanks again everyone, and happy shooting
Cheers!

Just stumbled across this and wow!
Everything is right about this shot.
Excellent tones and focal point too.

A very interesting compisition. The central placement of the subject implies feeling of balance, which is further underlined by the narrow srip, upon which the ballet dancer stands, which also leads into the middle of the frame. Interesting textures on the worn pointes, good lighting and a fitting B&W conversion.

Wonderful image! Look how torn and tattered those shoes are..you must have danced hard in those.

Pidge I really like this one so am putting it on my favourite list. I especially like it in B/W and the crop as it focusses on the tools of the ballet dancer, her feet. And only a ballet dancer could have stood like this on a windowsill without falling!

I gave this a 7 on the vote.

I know I'm a little late, but congrats on 4th place.
As a dancer myself, I agree that pointe shoes are definitely one of a dancer's top necessities. :) I think it met the challenge perfectly.

4 - DMC. There is only one 'tool' here. It is a nice photo and the b/w works well in my opinion, but for me, meeting the Challenge is the priority.

I like that the picture use the natural light, but it looks like the dancer is standing in a window sill. I don't like the ring on her finger.

Hmm this is one of my favourites. Nice composition. Nice dynamic range. I'm seeing a lot of clipped highlights in these entries due to all the shiney metal tools(hard subject to photograph in my limited experience!)

I love the converging lines behind her. It gives me the feeling she is balancing on a narrow beam. The darkness on the right side makes it a little difficult to see the outline of her leg clearly, but that is a minor issue. Overall a beautiful image. 9.

I like the filter color. The focus is good. The subject would be lovely in a setting with a complete blacked out background. GOod lighting as well in this shot. With the windowsill in the shot, it gives it an urban feel. 7

An excellent idea. Enjoy b&w shots. Would have liked the overall subject a bit sharper and a bit less light bouncing off the feet. 7

Very elegant. I really like the lighting. Not too crazy about the window ledge background. Appears to be a platform more appropriate for a gymnist (balance beam).

Great shot & crop. The only thing that is a tad distracting to me is the glare on the white/lightest areas. Otherwise, very well done.
