Guitar, strap, toy gun. Sunlit from the side plus a little overhead incandescent.

Lighting left deliberately harsh to depict harsh times, and to highlight the conflicts between black and white, peace and war, democracy and oligarchy ...
For those too young or who don't remember, in 1968:
@ Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated. A white segregationist, James Earl Ray, was convicted, but proclaimed his innocence from prison before he died. Many people still suspect covert US government complicity in the crime.
@ Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated by a Palestinian radical, Sirhan Sirhan; he is still in prison.
@ Eight Israeli athletes are murdered in their dormitory at the Munich Olympic Games by Palestinian terrorists.
@ Chicago police riot and brutalize demonstrators during the Democratic National Convention, leading to the ludicrous episode in American jurisprudence know as the trial of the Chicago Seven (demonstrators, not cops).
@ Richard M. Nixon uses the promise of a "secret plan" for disengagement from the Vietnam War to win the Presidency, with the predictable disasterous results. |

Give the "impossible" tonal range, I have deliberately "gone to extremes" in the tonal range, partly in keeping with the growing extremism of the times, partly to make parts of the image disappear (which some compained about) to represent the "unknown" that we were facing in that time of turnmoil.
And, partly I did it to disguise that I used a really cheap plastic gun as my prop, and I wanted the parts of it people could see to look somewhat real--that little "Made in China" imprint just detracts a bit too much from the atmosphere ....
See the notes for the reasons I though a gun was a pretty good symbol for the year. |

| My father was serving a tour in Vietnam in 1968. Good job compiling items that shaped events from this year. The gun is not lit very well and there are some really blow out spots on the guitar strap. Would have liked to see more detail in the guitar strings as well. |

| I like the subject, the comp. is a bit off tho. I would have liked to have seen more of each object shown, crop maybe is too tight. This could have been titled "War and Peace" (if the challenge description had not stated that the title was to be the 'year'). The pistol seems to clash with the peace sign and guitar. I am assuming that that is on purpose, to reflect the time, and the change in the social conscious...the war and the war protesters...... Or am I just reading too much into it? |
