Here I wanted to do something very different from the common liquid splash. The properties of milk are amazing in stop motion because milk appears to take on the look of a sculpture. It looks more like wax or plastic. I did experiment with it before and did an image which I was going to enter in the past "Macro" challenge. Well, I didn't because some people will argue the macro virtues. So I entered the image elsewhere and won.

When the milk challenge appeared I did nothing until Tuesday at 3:00 pm, but was finished at 4:30 pm. This image is indeed a macro because the bottle is only 2 1/2" tall. Otherwise the mess would have bathed me and equipment. The original idea started as a vision and then to make it happen. I wanted milk to appear rising with a distinct cut off at the top, that is nothing poured. Here then is how it was accomplished:

I wanted a black bottom so as to get the nice semi dark tones against the white. I employed glossy black plastic as the base. It had to be flat, that is no plate or dish because then I would be back to a common splash. The rest was easy. You fill the bottle half way and then use a tablespoon (experimented with 1/2 and 1 ounce plastic measurers. The spoon was the best. You fill the spoon and then you flip it up and with the other hand press the shutter. You do this about twenty times and you wind up with all these wild apparitions. I did make an error in my set up and had to go back and reshoot again. A misplaced backlight spilled too much light near the background. This was corrected and the series retaken. I will post the other effort in my port under b/w.

i'm still trying to work out how a flipped spoon makes the kinda weird statue of milk on the right?

can you explain a little better for a simpleton like me? i've been playing with milk a bit myself to (didn't enter or know challenge was on) but i'm curious :-)

I find myself looking through challenges trying to figure out which one is yours. You are a true talent and a great asset to this site. What I find most impressive about your entries is the fact that you take the time to explain how it is done and do not hesitate to teach others. There are other photographers on this site who rack up the ribbons, but never take the time to explain the process they used to get the end result. You are truly underappreciated and I couldn't be more happy that you won another blue.

Amazing! How on earth did you manage to capture a shot like this? Luck and patience? I really like the composition of this image, lighting is very good. Milk seems to have been a difficult one to capture without blowing out yet you've seemed to have done it perfectly. I'm predicting a very high position in this challenge for this image.

8 - Good shot. Criticism; no clue how you did this, but if the start of the 'flow' were a little higher, would have made this an even better shot in my opinion. Perhaps a slightly different angle too. Maybe 'zoomed out' slightly too. Not sure what the 'base background' is but it is a little distracting when looking hard at this shot, mainly because of what I think is the texture of it. That said, dependent what color that was, though this shot looks good in b/w, I am interested whether this shot would have looked better (for the Challenge) in color.

08/25/2005 03:35:29 PM
dang, you put a lot of effort into this. nice job
  Photographer found comment helpful.
08/25/2005 01:35:02 PM
Yes! I am looking at all the "milk splash" pictures at once and this, in my opinion, is the best. That glob is so amazing I'm not quite sure what I'm even seeing. The splash is well frozen and everything is in focus. I would pick this as a ribbon winner. 10.
