A response to your response...

I finally was able to put my finger on what bothered me about this picture.

The boots are positioned in a manner such that they _should_ have feet and legs in them. Like you caught the lumberjack mid-stride. But there is no lumberjack, making me wonder if the lumberjack is a ghost or something.

Instead, what you seem to be going for here is a "tools of the trade" type shot. You've got the axe in a position of rest. Why not mess the boots up a little, like they've just been taken off the lumberjack's feet? Muss the laces, pull out one of the tounges, maybe even knock one over on its side...

The feeling of unrest that I just couldn't put my finger on until now is that this shot looks TOO perfect... like the lumberjack was just vaporized by aliens or something.

Thanks everybody for the comments and feedback. I would like to address a couple of items that came up more than once.

1) Color of the wood. The wood is as it appeared. I split a few pieces from the pile in the background, so it's fresh split. It started raining after I had everything setup so I packed up the camera until the rain ended (it was a light drizzle really). The wood being wet, took on a darker more saturated tone.

2) No lumberjack. Well, the lumberjack is me - part time around the house anyway, therefore I couldn't be in the boots and in the photo at the same time. Actually, I never really thought about it since it was a shoe challenge. Guess, I could have set the 10 second timer. That would have been interesting! ;^)

As for the rest of the wood pile, it's going to wait for splitting. It's not up in rotation until next summer...besides, I might need it for a prop again. He-he.

Nice shot, very clever. I wish the shoes looked a bit mmore casual, though.

This looks like something straight out of a SEARS catalouge ( which is a good thing in terms of image quality ). I can almost smell the pine :)

Nice rugged look, like the earthy colors, nothing seems out of place.

This is another of those odd shots in this challenge where the photographer has antropomorphisized their shoes, Are those boots just after chopping that wood? You get me? Should have left the boots on the person chopping the wood.

Great hues/tones and focus. This could be a Cabelas ad. Great job.

Beautiful warm tones in this shot. Great composition too. (I even like the border) The yellows and oranges in the (cedar?) wood almost overpower the colors and focus of the boots though. Still - very appealing image.

Lovely colour tones and textures, great composition and ambient light. I'd have preferred a plain black border. The colour you chose fits the image only in some parts, it feels irregular to the eye. 10.

good setup. this looks like an ad for boots. the colour of the wood is a bit intense for me though - it takes your eye away from the subject.

Good composition. And creative idea. I think I would've liked it without the border, but nice job.

Fit Challenge Criteria: 2/2
Contrast/Color: 1/2
Composition: 2/2
Photo Quality: 1/2
My Subjective Affinity: 2/2

I really like the photo. Composition and subject are great. The colors are a bit off in the log, and appear way too saturated.

An interesting setting makes for a better than average shoes photo. The color really pops on this one too, which is nice. Maybe put a lumberjack in those boots (from the knee down or so) and it would have been a 10 in my opinion.
