Didn't stage this shot. I was just taking pics of my son holding the new rabbit we got and while reviewing it, I noticed after desat it might work for the High Contrast challenge. There was a black computer chair behind them, and I was able to clone a part of it to make the background go all black. Thanks for the votes. While not my highest scoring challenge entry, its by far my personal favorite.

I added this to my favorites long ago (during the voting period for this challenge, maybe), and I could have sworn that I commented on it, but apparently I didn't.

Anyway, I'll leave a comment now. I really like this one. He seems to have a great, but very subtle, expression in his eyes that, as a pet owner, I can really relate to. And it works really well in high contrast, too.

P.S. I love Amber's comment. What a wild dream!

P.P.S. The pillow pattern doesn't bother me one bit!

Fantastic shot Kel! I've been out of the loop for awhile and just sort of picking through what I missed. This is a great shot and a great finish! Congratulations!

...and after reading the critique club entry below, it took me awhile to get that the story was the nightmare. I am happy that amber is seeing a therapist. :P

Hi from the Critique Club!

I really did not want to get this one. I went to confession twice having voted on this one and my husband thinks it is our new screensaver!

And this is a first for me - I pulled this yesterday and decided to leave it till the morning. As a result I had a series of nightmares: I was working at a big company and left for a holiday. I forgot about the two rabbits in the cage by my desk. When I returned the rabbits had multiplied but were all thin and diseased from lack of food and water. When I tried to pick them up they fell through my fingers as there was nothing to hold on to! I tried to hide all this, but someone found out. EVERY one in the company shunned me, practicaly spitting at me in disgust when they passed. I decided to leave, got into the lift to go down 6 floors, only the lift kept going and speeded up. It just kept going down and down and I was convinced I was going to die. See what you did to me?:))

This is a lovely black and white image. It's one of the few that I don't have to think 'is it high contrast or not?'. It meets the challenge perfectly.

Compostionally, there is a lovely balance between the subject and negative space. The viewer's eye is led back and forth between the model's eyes and the rabbit's eye, ensuring the image is not static.

There is so much expression in the model's eyes that you can't fail to feel 'something' when you look at them. Blame the nightmare, but I can't help thinking of 'Fatal Attraction' when I look at it - when Glenn Close boils the rabbit in the pot. If you had her instead of Fetor in this image, it would have been the perfect publicity poster for the film:)

The blacks in the image are wonderful. I love the way the black body of the rabbit has melted into the black background.

To be honest I never even noticed the pillow before - too busy looking at...well you know...but changing it to white was simply the icing on the cake.

What more can I say? I'm off for a bit of counselling and another visit to the confessional;)

Took advice from my commenters. Turned the Pillowcase white.
Good idea.

Kelly,

You know what would look cool in this? Color the pillow red, leaving the rest B&W. Just a thought!

I'm glad to see this in the top 20. Probably would have placed higher if it was a little sharper, and less reliance on smoothing.

Great shot though.

Surprised this didn't finish higher honestly. But congrats on your top 20 finish. And yes, this boy is definitely sexy! LOL DAMN! Great piece of work.

I really like this. My only critique is the amount of background in the upper 1/2 of the photo above the guys head, I find myself distracted. Great shot though.

This is so cute!!! The only thing that I would change is the pillow. The pattern is kind of distracting. My eye goes to the pattern instead of your handsome face.

On one hand I like the interaction between the person and the viewer. On the other hand I wonder; Shouldn't he look his 'friend' in the eyes if it is such a close friend.
I'm having a hard time trying to decide what works better for me.

I like the B&W and use of negative space. Good mood. 8

There's a lot to like in this image. I like the close crop on the man's face (closer still might have been even better, just above the eyes) and the rabbit. I like the way you've allowed the white parts of the rabbit to overexpose a bit - bringing out the contrast required by the challenge subject. The flat black background is also nice. I score this one a 6 - technically a good image, a little above average in composition, meets the challenge. What it doesn't do is grab me and WOW me. It doesn't suggest a story or an emotional connection that's compelling and sucks me in. Overall nice image. Good luck!

Great subject matter - high contrast treatment fits it perfectly. Solid black background also just right. Not sure about patterned pillow case but everything else works well - eye contact is great!

Very nice eyes and the man's are nice too:) I think I'd like this without the rabbit - because with a model like that you don't need anything else....
