Lots of lights, high shutter, big f/stop for effect.

Shot at High ISO to obtain a faster shutter to darken shadows, add a little grain...etc.

Converted to B/W in Digital Image Pro 10. Levels and Curves, USM crop and scaled (using the GIMP).

A soft, subjective contrast (guessing) from being fully in bloom - to death. bumping up after a second look. I like the black and white treatment as well.

Definitely a lot of contrasts to be found here, light and dark, fresh and dead, even looks as if there's a portion with more of a focus (the dead rose) vs the softer focused live rose. I think its an interesting study in contrasts but in general not something I would have on my walls. I also find the dark.. area on the top of the fresh rose very distracting, looks like the coloring of one of the petals is merging with maybe the stem of the dead rose which makes it a bit more noticable than it normally would be. I gave a 6

Looks like a great idea and could have been really great, but it looks like too much neat image smoothed over many of the details that would have made this image more interesting. Not a bad shot though.
