Challenge: Destinations (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi
Location: Farm field near my house, Ontario, Canada

The ladder is being suspended by two scarily thin wire cables held by my dad and brother. (I really had to convince them, especially my dad that I wouldn't die.) Due to ye-olde-leverage-laws, it was very easy for them to hold (I also dug a little hole in the ground before they came out to set the ladder bottom in so it wouldn't slide out from under me when I was on it.)I set the camera on timer, ran, slowly climbed up the ladder, and hoped for the best. We were only out in that field for about 5 pictures before I got it how I saw it in my head.

I wanted this to represent not only the destination up, but more in the way of a metaphor for constantly 'climbing' life and reaching new destinations. I didn't want it to look like I was dead or something and going to heaven, so I wore bright colors and edited it like so.

It is a big improvement from my 4th place DQ'd room entry, which was taken in the same place.

The end!

... after looking at all your pictures... I've come to a conclusion. I think that you have way too much talent. It's really not necessary. I feel that you should share some of your awesome skill with someone who needs it. Like me.

Amazing pictures, I really like them all. You're really planning on taking this whole photography thing somewhere, aren't you?

Clever and inspiring work. I like that you add how you did the pictures. This one is so different from the Desolation one I just commented on, but I like them both equally.

Wow, I can imagine your brother and father's concern. Great image though, that cloud at top left really adds a lot. It's upward-sweeping shape adds a lightness and lift that wouldn't be there with a clear sky.

Unique thought. It is almost like the picture could use a little cropping, lot of wasted space. Overall very good.

Hey, just think. I was going to post on your MIB shot that I was really missing seeing ribbons with your name on them lately. Now I just feel dumb. :)

And look dumb. And sound dumb, but that's another issue altogether. ;)

Keep it up guy!

PS. I actually did this before. I was a window washer in Canada and sometimes there are places and things you just can't get at due to landscaping and houses on weird terrain. I was lighter than my buddy, so I climbed up the ladder and he held it steady a few inches from a window. It was only really scary going up and down. I went right to the top, about twenty five feet up, about the same height as your ladder.

Us crazy Canucks eh?

Good to see you doing light and bright shots as well. And you do them as well as the dark, grungy fogmachine shots :)
So, the trick was something as simple as a thin wire. Very good. Are they at all wisible on the photo if one knows where to look?

Great illusion and I love the colors. The subject seems a little small and a little too centered on the horizontal. I would like to see less foreground since it really does nothing to contribute to the overall image and perhaps a slightly tighter crop. I wouldn't take anything off the top though.

Very Clever

09/22/2005 05:32:08 AM
Reminds me of a stock photo I had seen. The subject is surreal but the background is too real. So it just doesn't come together for me even tho' it's generally a nice pic.

this is real good. it will be interesting to know how you did create this illusion, when the challenge is done. the composition is good and so are the tech.parts of this photo so I predict top 5
Good luck

09/20/2005 08:31:37 PM
I'm trying to work out if you used cables to hold the ladder and cloned them out or you have some sort of frame hidden just behind the rise... I think the second option ?
the shot has good colors and lighting, but the shot dose not seem balanced to me
maybe moving the space from the bottom and right to the top and left would have helped so it would look like you were climbing more into space - 7
