Challenge: Reflections Without Mirrors II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Studio, Vancouver, WA
Date: Oct 15, 2005
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 43 sec
Galleries: Emotive, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Oct 15, 2005

This took some work.

Basically it is a long exposure in the dark with lights being used as flashes. I had two utility lamps (one behind, one in front and to the left). They were connected to a switch which could be turned on and off (with my feet). I covered half the lens and then opened the shutter in the dark. For the reflection, I exposed for about 3-4 seconds with the lights on. Then I reversed the lens cover and exposed for about 1 second for me sitting on the chair. My wife, obviously was in the first "lighting" and not in the second.

It took much goofing around to get it right. There still is some artifact, but not bad for basic editing. Apparently I have some sensor dust, and in color there were some hot pixels too. Damn!

I wish I could have made the composition a little more interesting, and we didn't know how to seat me. I'm supposed to be daydreaming, but it looks a bit like I'm watching a stripper. I think I'll manage to get the "how'd he do that?" vote, but I might lose the "aesthetic" vote. Well, gotta gamble a bit. At least it will be original. Hoping for a 6.0. (we all hope for 6.0, but my point is I don't think it will be 6.5).

Post processing: crop, levels, channel mixer, brightness/contrast, selective color (neutrals), resize, USM, border.

I think a lot of relections got lost in the shuffle. This is a good one. Perhaps the window looked like a mirror to some. Keep the creativity flowing.

I am trying to figure this out. Looks like the chair is erased on the left side unless your arm is hanging over it. The left sleeve looks muted and the rest of the shirt sharp as though there were some kind of manipulation done which i can't quite make out. I see a reflection in the window of I guess you and your love. I see that it is validated so others must have been confused too. Image quality is very nice. Deserves a high score because of the complexity. 8

love the concept! the shadow heading towards the "mirror" is a bit distracting. more diffused lighting may have helped soften the image a bit...

I love this photo. The story portrayed within and the emotion within the man on the right. Outstanding work. This photo really touched me. 10 and a favourite.

Validated so I assume there's no image manipulation and then I really appreciate the compositio and the idea...

is that a mirror or a window? hard to tell.

Very good idea and well made. The good DoF to help the reflected couple less in focus aids in the memory illusion you have created. In addition, the couple is nicely and softly lit. The shadow on the window frame makes the lighting look harsher then it would have looked otherwise. One of my favorites.

Great shot....wonderfully done - love the black and white and the sharp focus - excellent imagery.

This photo is absolutely a winner to me. The suggestion given perfectly brougth to live with soft light on the woman's shoulder and the positioning of the light behind the large man causing deep contrast, makes this photo the favourite in this challenge (so far).

clever - perfect title. Know how it could have been done having seen this but am in awe of the ability to imagine this. Well done.

Nice concept but isn't that a mirror? even if its a glass...it still comes very close to mirror. And then there are lot of shadows which are distracting the view...but, nice job!
10/19/2005 05:17:06 PM
Well it can't be a reflection in a mirror, so it must be a photograph. But that isn't a reflection at all. Sorry if my conclusion is wrong.
