Challenge: Image Grain (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Location: Lake Mathews, California
Date: Oct 17, 2005
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/160th
Galleries: Emotive, Animals
Date Uploaded: Oct 21, 2005

My current artsy challenge entry (what) is doing poorly, as have my more unusual entries that feature animals, so I have a lot of trepidation about entering something so totally out of the box even for horse photographers. Well, as I keep reminding myself, we're here to stretch, that includes the voters too, hopefully they'll give themselves more than a few seconds on this one. I love grain, noise and soft focus, this will be available as an art print. Shot in the rain and fog, with 580EX flash, at 1 1/3 minus compensation with a Better Beamer at 153mm. Cropped slightly on the left and right. Adjusted LAB lightness curve. No sharpening. Toned it so that the grain would be more obvious. No cameras or lenses or flash were harmed in the making of this picture.

(so grateful for this poem!)
She is aeons old, and wise beyond compassion.
My spirit grows by measure that she gives:
a knowledge that all paths will come together
in stone and mist, and in that mist she lives.

She is fleet hoofbeats far across the plain
of man's beginning, endless waves of horse
flowing like some primoridal sea to sweep us
across remembrance on our mortal course.

Flowing like some vast sea. And I float now,
vague and adrift, in deep currents down her eyes,
losing myself, remembering how I will
(when my time comes) fade into misty sighs.

This photo brought tears to my eyes. I cant speak about the photos composition / technical aspects etc..I dont care. This photo speaks to me deep within like very few photos do. It is much more than a photo. Personification of selfless love, beauty and grace..thats what she is. I can feel the love you bear her in this picture..One of my very favourites...

ha, I'm happy I guessed it was you. Sorry to harsh on you about the grain, but this picture should be one you are proud of. It's a great shot.

Thanks--I learned an important lesson this time--the grain really shows in the big/original photo, but apparently not (enough) on the small web version. Yikes.

I loved this photo.I can't believe it didn't get in the top twenty. As far as I'm concerned it did!!!

one of my favorites this challenge -- so moody and the grain and rain are integrated so well in to the composition.

Wonderfuk tones of gray in this image. Nice composition and good focus. Overall I very much like this photo. I think that some grain effect would have helped for this challenge. JMO

I Imagine a wild Conemara moor looking at this. Can even smell the wet horsiness from here! Odd light blurriness at the top like vaseline on lens. Is that motion blurring artificial in background? Works well with great atmosphere. No grain to speak of but I'll make an exception in this case. Top pick

Scarey, like something out of a horror movie :) The only part which distracts me somewhat is that there appears to be a kind of gradient going towards the top. The top part looks too light compared to the bottom part. It brings over a kind of unbalanced feeling.

beautiful shot, not much grain here, but i like it as aposed to over graining, and if u had taken this shot with film, even if u had pushed the film u prob. wouldn't have gotten more grain out of it......so well done

like the vignette/white/opaque bar at the top, it adds a nice touch creative

Very arresting photo! I like the soft feel of this photo but IMHO, I wonder if a bit more grain might help for this challenge. well shot!!

I see fog but no grain. To me, the eyes are not focused enough to let me see into her soul. I think it would work better with more of the horse in the picture.

No grain here. It is really essential to meet a theme of a challenge. Otherwise we will have a huge heap of nice unsorted photos.

Every time I see a horse shot I have to think it's lynnesite. Is it you? This picture is excellent in composition, lighting, and subject. It is utterly lacking in the grain I'm looking for (when I pull the laptop to 10" from my eyes to see if there is noise or not, that's not a good sign). I'll give you a 5 just cuz it's a really nice pic.

The grain must be very subtle? I can't seem to see any, certainly not enough to add ambience to a wonderful pictures. Nice capture, but lacks the grain.

Where is the image grain? This is a stunning, moody, very well done photograph. I have actually added it as a favorite. But I just don't see any image grain.

This is a gorgeous image, but I am straining my eyes trying to find image grain. Is this image clear? Tom Cruise would say "Crystal". Or I'm nuts. Beautiful pic otherwise.

Beautiful and haunting. Has a more 'misty' quality than grainy, but wonderfully done
