Great lighting, great composition, great facial expression. Unlike a previous poster, I like the out-of-focus background. If it were me... I would send a copy to Warner and collect my Virginia Medal of Honor. :-)

Really nice job. I didn't recognize Warner, and was trying to figure out what this was - I had it in my mind that it was a formal polo match in Great Britain - oh well.

Keep the ribbons coming. You are on a roll!

For the "Tribute" challenge, I was studying famous photographers and their styles. After being on net for few days, going through hundreds of photos, when I came back on DPC, I saw the top three photos for "Singled-Out" challenge. I can't believe how close these photos are to the photos from the 'legends' which I have been studying in last few days. "Eye Contact", "Girl .." and "Dressed .." are all just "wow!" (though I feel better title would have complimented "Dressed...")

your 'topposition' very well rewarded in this complex but very well done composition
this pale colourrange i really love from grey to black and just the skinteint on top absolutely apropriete for a 'bizzy' scene like this
maybe the woman in red seems a tad out of place between the repeating raincoats but thats just maybe ;-)
greatlooking image sKip !

Great scene, I wondered when I saw it why you had'nt converted it in B&W. Discarding these flesh tones and slightly darkening the back crowd would have realy dramatized this already perfectly well delivered image. congratulations

WO-HOOO!!!
Wonderful photo!!! Such an amazing singled out!!! I don't think there was any other photo in that challenge that answered this so classically and completely!!!

Congratulations for a great great great photo and congratulations again for another ribbon!!!

By the way, most likely that I would add just a tiny bit of hue to his gloves, to make it look colored. Perhaps even just some cleaner white.
It's kinda annoying that his hands look like they are b&w in this al colorful photo.
On the other hand... that's just me :-/

An interesting shot, but the DOF seems off. Subject almost appears cut/pasted from another shot. Effect is not believable (given the woman not in a raincoat), although focal point has indeed been singled out.

Edited to add: Well, I've never been so pleased to have been wrong in an assessment! Congratulations, Skiprow!

8 - Good. Like the way everyone is 'otherwise occupied', including the main subject, even though he seems to be aware of the camera. Criticism; mainly the lady in the maroon coat/jacket, being the only 'other' without a raincoat/cover detracts from the overall impact and 'clothing effect', save for a totally different crop, not much you can do about that, obviously. Depending what you had to work with, the subject more centered, a more finely tuned crop on the right and possibly more space at the bottom may have made this even better in my opinion, but does work well as is. Up to 8 from 7.

I like the contrast between the rain gears and the formal costume. I do not like as much the increased blur of the background. I looks too artifical.

01/19/2006 10:26:07 PM
interesting group. there seems to be a lot of intriguing subjects in the stands. be a bit more careful with your postprocessing, as your main subject's outline makes him look pasted in....unless of course you were going for something more bizarre looking.

01/19/2006 02:57:03 AM
A very nice shot. I am not giving it a full mark because I think that the DOF is not sufficiently used here to isolate the main subject, which was one of the requirements.

01/18/2006 11:46:40 PM
What on earth? I thought you only got those rain coats at Disney World, funny. This is a great photo. The focus, exposure and contrast are perfect. My only comment on composition would be that the woman in front, without the rain gear is distracting mainly because she is not your subject and she also is not geared up, therefore she should be cropped out.

I love the drama of this shot. I feel like I'm watching the climactic scene in a musical. I also like the ambiguity of his expression. He seems to be ready for great joy or great tragedy. One of my two 10s.

Great answer to the challenge. He really stands out with sharpness and light - good job. I'd possibly have given it another point if he'd been on thirds, he's just a bit too centred. If you could have lost the woman with him (figuratively speaking of course!)
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/16/2006 01:24:18 AM
Compositionally, this is perfect. The DOF is shallow and he is certainly in a crowd. Bravo for not only meeting the challenge, but doing it in an appealing way. Good job. 9
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/16/2006 01:21:33 AM
I like this, but the blurring on the left side is a small issue. I would also have liked to see this cropped with the man on thirds.
