When I heard of the fashion challange I immidietly decided to do an outdoor fashion shot. I wanted to do something simple but didn't want to use a plain background allthough they seem to do pretty well with dpc members :)

My girlfriend, Audur (babylon), and I went and it was getting pretty late. The sun was about to set and the sky was looking excellent. So everything seemed it was falling to place.

I had one of my Bowens Espirit 500 lights with my and a softbox for it. I also brought my Tronix Explorer which is a portable power supply. I only had one 1GB card with me that was half full. So I only had about 50 shots that I could shoot.

I decided to shoot at F/4.0 because of the sensor dirt which dominated my sensor :) It worked out fine because there s only small sensor dirt you can see in the upper left corner of the picture. I would have taken it on a different aperture if the sensor would have been clean.

First I took some shots on a beach near to the place I took this shot. They were all right but there was something missing. I saw these grass in a distance and decided to move over there for a couple of last shots. Moved there and this picture was one of my last shots I took.

The editing that took place was not much. Levels, Shadow/Highlights and took some saturation out of it. I croped it a bit. A little of each side and some of the top and bottom. I was thinking about a square crop for this picture but decided on this one instead.

Here is a link to the place that I got my power supply from:
//www.innovatronix.com

I just want to thank you all for all of those great comments. I'm honored to have taken first place with this shot. I spent much time thinking about how to shoot it and took my time setting up the lights just right. And than I spent even longer time deciding on the crop and post processing.

Thanks again :)

Give it a 10 for effect!

Congratulations, Arnit, wonderful shot. Having a dirty sensor payed off, I guess, I think the shallow DOF works well here.

Well done, this is a great image. I know English isn't your first language but I do feel strongly about photographers sharing the story of how they got their picture. That is the basis for the strong community feeling of DPC. To always refuse to share with others looks like you are here just to take votes and not give anything back. You don't even feel committed enough to the community to share you shutter and aperture settings. There, I feel better now.

I think I'd like this even better if the camera was moved just a little to the left (or the subject to her left, and our right). And that's coming from the standpoint of really liking this image. An optimistic 9 from me.

Nice looking shot. The hard lighting on your subject against the fading sky works well.

Now this is very nice, very sophisticated, very 'fashion magazine' to me. The lighting and pose are perfect for this shot. Use of a natural (and very pretty) background is a huge boost for this photo - it would have looked good as a studio shot; it's great as it is. Very well done. 10.

Everyone in this challenge that used a full live model took a risk. Here it was very well done. The coat itself I find rather bland, but in this background and setting, with expression of the model, I do find it pleasing. Something out of an old movie perhaps, and as if she is waiting for a plane to come in where she will meet up with her partner who maybe is another FBI agent. LOL....One of my top picks.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
02/22/2006 09:28:07 AM
Don't ask me why...this is not really my style. For me, this doesn't shout fashion photography. There is a bit of sensor dust along the top, the coat is blown out at the collar. Wrinkles at the bottom fo the coat. Bright line opening of light is a bit distracting at the bottom of the horizon...BUT this is my favorite photo here. This is why I love DPC. Not a traditional "fashion" image...not what you see everytime you open a magazine. Not a duplicated image. This is something you created. You're making your own definitions. The emotional power totally overplays the technical details (which could be fixed in advanced editing anyhow). I'd love to know what you used for lighting since it appears you're out in the middle of nowhere. I love it! 10 from me. (sorry for the novel)

Excellent. the background, the model....technically perfect. I'm not sure if i think the light on her is a lottle too bright, but that's just my taste. Great job, and if this doesn't ribbon there is something seriously wrong with the world.
