A Green Apple, A small light, a little water and a lot of patience

HEY!!!!!! Thanks for great votes and comments!!!!

See...an old dog can learn a trick or two. Almost 4 years after I join and I finally snag a Blue Ribbon...Woohoo!!

I have throw out a couple of acknowledgments. The first is to deapee and his great shot "Illuminate". That cirlcular light pattern idea has stuck in my head for a while and it seemed a natural for this shot.

The second shout out goes to John Setzler and his black and white photo "Foliage". That photo has always set the standard for using water drops to accent a photo in a logical way and I thought of that shot when making this one :-)

Beyond that, thanks again to everyone who liked the shot.

Very simple shot technically..I had a very small egg light that is a small diode on an end of a stalk used to check on incubating eggs. Set the apple on a small block in the middle of a black velvet drape.

Sprayed the apple with a mister to get some nice water drops. Set the camera for 25 second exposure. Click....swirled the light to mimic an apple peel which took 3 seconds and then let the rest of the 22 seconds "set" the black and image.

-Levels..very little to none
-Selective colors...mainly to blacken the blacks
-Saturation to pop the green
-Curves to give it that bit of contrast pop
-Sharpen for the output resolution
-Done

03/17/2006 10:57:29 PM
Okay, I trued to recreate this for the Deja Vu II challenge. I gave up quickly. How did you controll that light so well? I got nice overall lighting on the apple, but that light trail.....well, let's just say it was really messy. I'm making this a favorite, because I now appreciate how well done this is.
03/17/2006 12:38:46 AM

03/08/2006 03:37:06 AM
This was one of the easiest "blue ribbon picks" during the voting stages I can remember, it stood head and shoulders above the rest of the field.
03/08/2006 03:09:04 AM
Nicely done Hokie; sets itself above most of the light trails by having "symbolism"; the trail is the peel. Congrats on blue!

I don't think I have ever given out this many tens in one Challenge...so many incredible shots! I like your green light, the waterdrops on the green apple, and your single green frame, even though I usually dislike borders. Just a really excellent job. The composition, too!
03/04/2006 10:24:36 AM
The almost metalic look of the apple is awesome

03/02/2006 10:38:05 AM
Love the water on the apple and emphasis on the texture
03/02/2006 08:57:02 AM
This is my ribbon pick for this challenge, beautiful, simple and brilliantly done. 10
03/02/2006 03:49:15 AM
I really like this shot! The balance of your usage of the light with the darkness is striking, coupled with the drops of water this makes for an amazing shot. Finally, the border draws the colors together as well as keeps your eyes within the shot and flowing along the curves of the light. Easily my favorite shot in the whole set. If you don't win blue then there is seriously something wrong in the world. :) Good luck.
03/02/2006 03:33:30 AM
Amazingly crisp looking apple. great work.
03/02/2006 12:30:38 AM
From what I've seen very few people actually got the painting with light concept well enough to come up with a decent photo using it. You have done a great job. Thank you.
03/01/2006 11:18:39 PM
very crisp image!
03/01/2006 06:01:18 PM
I think the way you have left the moisture/water on the apple looks fantastic.
03/01/2006 05:38:16 PM
Good shot, like the water drops on the apple. Don't know about the border though.
03/01/2006 05:05:21 PM
Wonderful shot... amazing clarity, and the border doesn't suck!
03/01/2006 04:55:35 PM
Bad pun...but I do like the visual elements here. 8
03/01/2006 03:13:18 PM
Like the reflections in the apple. Great idea!
03/01/2006 02:43:59 PM
Simple and really well done. The water drops on the apple look really good.
03/01/2006 01:17:36 PM
