I spent this afternoon prowling the streets of Chicago's Loop. It was mostly sunny, but the skyscrapers tend to block out the sunlight, so I sought out those places that the sunlight did reach. I was under the El tracks on Wabash when I spotted this advertisement on the side of a bus stop. I thought it would be good to juxtapose someone against it, so I hung around, waiting to see who would happen by. After a few minutes, this gentleman walked onto the scene. I thought he looked fantastic, and I snapped several shots of him. This was the best of the lot.

I love the juxtaposition of the grumpy old man and the happy go lucky cheesy guy. Great shot!

I really like this. I was one of your 18 tens. The contrast between the old man and the advertisment is so cool.

This got a 9 from me. This was clearly well thought out and composed. It's obvious that you had to wait for the perfect moment to present itself once you saw the sign. I liked the witty incongruity of the happy, young guy on the sign and the cranky expression on the elderly man.

An amazing capture you've got here. Real world vs Surreal world. The media freaks me out! The ideas of reality are so warped. Excellent contrast of two worlds. Very nice work!

Remarkable shot! In many ways perhaps the best of the challenge, but arguably not quite candid" enough as the ad dominates so strongly. Really fine work though.

Top work Chris: leaving my own aside, I thought this should win, and I'm surprised and delighted to see it so highly rated. And just 31/10,000ths behind, er, mine ;-)

Everything I love about really good street photography: wit, whimsy, charm and simplicity. And totally candid, naturally. So good to see photographs at DPC that are about the photograph, and not about the photographer. Love your work, Chris.

who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you
think you are, ha ha ha bless your soul
you really think you're in control

I think you're Crazy

This is an exquisite example of how a bisected picture can be powerful, the contrasting colours is just great, just as the contrasting expressions. Like truth vs. fiction. Impressive piece.

Great shot, great piece of street photography with the contrasting expressions and light vs. bright. I like how the green balances out with the child walking up the stairs on the left, a little more of the serendipity. 10.

Wow, my favorite of the challenge! Its almost as if the man in the advertisement has aged and gotten bitter, after all those sweet mints. Great job. 10

This my favorite in the entire candid challenge. Its the contrast between the almost ridiculous advertisement and reality that wins it for me.
My blue ribbon choice.

Photo seems in two halves, bit distracting.

The size of the ad is too big compared to the subject. I would suggest zooming out so you can still see the man in the ad, but make the "real life" part of the shot take up a larger area so it doesn't take away too much attention. On the bright side, I really like the idea of the contrast in moods. Very creative.

I love the unbalance in this. The left side is almost monocromatic in contrasty subtle lit brown tones while the right side is vibrant, saturated, and colorful. The texture of the dividing line is like a zipper. Cool shot.

Great capture. You would almost think that this had to be a posed shot considering the vast difference in facial expressions between the two. I really liked the comparison of the two sides - happy and bright to darker and more gloomy.

This is my kinda stuff here. the juxtaposition of these elements makes it startling. I also love that this ad is so completely cheesy and surreal while reality blasts in your face when you see the "non-ad" man. To me, this is what photography is about. The focus is perfect ... people in the disatance put the viewer in the real world. Brilliant. 10 and fave.

Ah now, a proper photograph; love the juxtaposition here, and your control of this exposure is excellent; I'm a fan of the results of public printed images and the 'real' anyhow. Super work.

This pic is great but you should try a title that doesn't say exactly what the photo is. but still give it a 6.

I think this is one instance where being further away would have been better. It is difficult to tell the picture on the right is an ad. I do love the contrast though between the guy in the ad, all happy and bright, and the guy standing there in his muted clothing.

I don't usually like comments or give them, but since candids are near and dear to my heart, I have decided to comment on every photo in this challenge.

I had to really look at this for a second to see that the title is the only thing that prevented me from thinking this was two shots fused together. I think for me it would have been a tough choice on whether or not to add the sign in the photo when the man to the left had such great features. Now the sign tends to pale the man on the left, the true candid, by comparison, so I have to give this a 5. I would have gone with less sign and more man.
