Challenge: Window Framed (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Pentax *ist DS
Lens: Sigma 24-135mm f/2.8-4.5 Aspherical IF for Pentax
Location: Kamloops, B.C.
Date: Apr 21, 2006
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/500 sec
Date Uploaded: Apr 21, 2006

Megan relaxes in the window of Playcare, the drop-in daycare at the YMCA where I take her twice a week to keep her aware that other children exist on earth. She also loves the babies there.

Well, whattya know. Blue. I finally get my hat-trick. There were some comments on the background blurring, and yah.. I admit, I did it a little stronger than I'd normally go, but sometimes you have to play the game. I made sure to get it approved before-hand though, cause I didn't want to risk any possibilities.. and thank *PETE* I did that.

Anyway, thanks for all the comments that were made during, and now after, and for all the comments to come (hopefully a few more. heh.)

It's nice to be on the front page again after all this time. I might have to change my Bio again.

*EDIT* OOPS.. I forgot. For those questioning the frame. That window goes up another 5 feet or so, so it was physically impossible to get the whole window in the shot. I went with the minimalist approach for purely personal reasons.. which is mainly because I liked it. I left the flowers there to give some kind of anchor to the top of the photo, so that you didn't just drift out of the frame. At least, that's how I saw it.

Yow! Superb shot, Glen. Phenomenal job propping up the Pentax numbers.
The flowers top this off, but it is all about the delicious post-processing.

Congrats on the blue. A lovely photo. The position of her little hand really does it for me. How sweet

There is somthing very poignant about her pose. It's candid, yet got that wistful, nostalgic air that only children can provide. Excellent bokeh (good move on that part) and the framing with the flowers is like the perfect nightcap of a long night out.

Congratulations on a well deserved ribbon!!

I'm reading your comments on this image, and wanted to pop back in to say that "leaving the flowers" is possibly the best single decision you made in this shot :-) I crop the flowers out, and it's "nice"; I leave them in, and it's "WOW": they add an unexpected note that's almost surreal. The more I look at this image the better I like it.

I think I must be going crazy...

I saw this several times and I continued to think the child was not a child at all, but one of those teeny tiny delicate porcelain figurines in a small window. I just saw your forum thread about the picture, and now I see that it is not at all how I kept seeing it. So, with that said good job at capturing the doll like nature in her.

04/30/2006 11:51:06 AM
Like this shot heaps, well composed and I love the colouring in it, the warm tones. The blurring of the backround is a bit over the top for me though, it´s well done but just too much for my taste. Gave this a 7.

Nice golden colors - the shallow DOF really makes the shot.

i think you blurred out the background too much which i hope doesnt constitute to removing a major element

04/29/2006 01:54:23 PM
I really like this. The colors, I think, are wonderful. I like the decals on the window too, but think a tighter crop down might work too. The baby looks so content with her pacifier.

04/29/2006 12:54:04 PM
nice one, but I tried to scroll to see the top of the photo.. then I noticed that this is it... this is good but would be better if the window frame would also be at the top... I imagine that it wasn't possible..

Beautiful! Bokeh looks very artifical though. Love the flowers at the top. Don't like the tobacco yellow tone to the photo.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
04/29/2006 07:58:52 AM
Really wonderful capture of a nice moment. I like the overall composition of the little girl off centered within the frame, and I think she has a very natural pose as she looks out the window. Its unfortunate that the top of the frame was cut off, although perhaps there was some elements outside of the frame that you chose to exclude.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
04/29/2006 02:33:10 AM
This is a gorgeous shot with a nice warm tone. Especially given the challenge, it is a shame the frame does not extend around the entire image. Nice capture.

04/27/2006 07:00:52 PM
Great use of DOF, the only thing that I think would have made this better would have been to have the top of the window frame also. Not always possible if it's a 6 foot window. Great pic.

04/27/2006 06:38:15 PM
This one stood out for me when I skimmed through some of the entries yesterday... it's charming. I really love the way the light falls on her face and hair and just gives her a golden halo. I like her pose in the window and the hint of a smile on her face. I love that I don't know what she's looking at but want to know. I love the out-of-focus background - lovely colours and shapes but lack of detail is just right. I like the framing of the window and the flowers at the top. Only thing I don't like is lack of closure of frame at top of the shot... But this is a GREAT shot!

Beautiful composition. Great expression on her face, there must have been something really interesting down there holding her attention!

Good post-processing as well, the hue creates a nice mood here. The only thing I wasn't sure about at first was the blurred background, but it kind of grows on you. The three flowers break it up nicely.

(Hang on a minute, a flower AND a baby in the same shot? 1 from me!) :)

I really like this shot as one of my favorites of the challenge. The color pallete and saturation give this a very emotive quality. It also has a nice candid feel not present in many of the other entries. Great use of DOF and composition to emphasize your subject... I vote an 8

I like the way you used this great DoF to blur the background (at least, I think that's what you;ve done ;) could also be PP ofcourse!)
The window frame is straight and looks like a photo frame!
My guess is you weren't able to get the top-part of the window on the photo, that's a l little bit of a pity, but the tulips really compensate that :) 9

Love the color and the lighting. The blur behind the glass is just a bit too much. Almost distracting.

Great photo and very unique. The tones a warm and appropriate. I think the composition would of worked equally well without the inclusion of the flowers, less to divide ones attention.

Exquisite light and detail...what a beautiful slice-of-life image. This should be framed on her wall. :)

Very nice. Is that 'real' DOF or blur? I hope it's 'real' as it is a very goo creative choice.
