this is such an excellent shot .. love the movement of the kids .. so apt .. :)

Love the shot. How did you manage to keep the kids from knocking over your camera setup. My wife is a 1st - 4th grade teacher. I have seen this sort of classroom myself.

You should send this to your local or national teachers union. I am sure they could find a good use for it.

This one was the best of the Challenge BTW. Miles above the rest but the blur....the blur.

Sadly considered an automatic negative by the general community. That needs to be "un-learned" along with a few other knee-jerk dislikes.

Okay, it's been more than 18 months since my last comment, and I STILL love this shot. :)

Great shot, My wife also teaches Kindergarten - your wife/model appears so calm in great juxtaposition with the chaos surrounding her this shot should be on the cover of the American Federation of Teachers magazine.

This is one of my favorites, and one of my faves among my faves.

My wife was also a teacher, and you've so captured her life. As I'm sure you know, it goes WAAAYYYY beyond the classroom, too!

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
Wow .. fantastic .. a true environmental portrait ...

Composition:
This is one time wehre centred plays directly into the picture ... with your wifes eyes being on the thirds line this really is awesome. I love that you did not ask the kids to all sit still and play nice for the camera as this would have removed the 'environment' from the shot.

Subject:
Challenge met, exceeded and extremely well.

Technical (Colour and light):
The crispness of the colours is great .. the lighting works so as not to overtake the shot. I would give a copy to your wife for her to put on the classroom wall and they can see how good they look.

To grow its vote?:
This is so subjective .. I did not vote this whole challenge as too busy writing papers for work .. but really this epitomises I think what was being sought ...

Summary:
Awesome ... well shot, well composed and well .. fantastic score. Keep it up!!!

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

This is great!! Exactly what I wanted to do in my portrait, but didn't have time to get permission from any of the kids parents. I'm glad somebody pulled it off and well too! 9

What a great idea and so perfectly executed. Your teacher is great (at staying still) and her expression. The centered subject works well. Just the right amount of movement from the kids. Colours and lighting great, Good balance of portrait and environment.

The motion blur on the children in this shot really tells the story!! I like that the teacher is looking at the camera and that you've included plenty of the "environment" in this shot!

This is very well done and perfect for the Challenge as opposed to many other images that I've seen thus far. I like the pose, execution and the motion blur speaks volumes. Good Luck!

05/19/2006 06:56:52 AM
Pretty cool but I think you should have gone all the way and really just had moving blurs around her, no faces to the kids at all. Good idea and pretty well executed.

05/18/2006 10:54:31 PM
I would really like to see the teacher off to the side a bit, but this really captures the environment. Good job.

Awsome interpretation here! a calm head among all the noise, very comfortable in her environment. Definitely displays the atmosphere of a kindergarten classroom. Very nicely done.

This is a terrific example of what an enviranmental portrait should be. My only complaint is that the teacher is a bit too centered. Wonderful. My first 9 in the challenge!

05/16/2006 12:08:08 PM
whew, one of the few here which rates top score. A jewel in a pile of...9. OK, I'm back. This is my blue ribbon shot by a Looooooong stretch. I even like it way better than mine (which isn't going to ribbon, but cross fingers for a Top 10). I wonder if this is Cindi, but have no real reason to think it is other than she was really proud of her shot. The only 10 in the challenge.

Satisfies the challenge perfectly... even satisfies the law of thirds, as there is more going on in the right than on the left. This photo belongs in a publication that describes the challenges a teacher faces daily... Great job!

This is something that I want to see in this challenge... you did not have to write a title to tell me what she works with. great movings on the kids.

05/15/2006 04:04:22 PM
Now this is very very cool. the concept of her still and calm in the middle of mayhem is the perfect environmental portrait! I am bothered by some of the motion work. It looks spontaneous but then some it doesn't so I suspect it was done PP. That doesn't detract from the image but it does just a tad on the vote. If it's all in-camera then I'm happy to add another point to my 7
