Challenge: Environmental Portrait (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Location: Kleifarvatn, Iceland
Date: May 12, 2006
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/200
Galleries: Portraiture, Rural
Date Uploaded: May 13, 2006

Taken on location about half an hour before sunset. Lit with a single bowens monolight with a 75° softlite reflector. The models name is Birkir Snær Einarsson. Many thanx to Daði for coming with us, mostly to make sure the light didn´t blow over but he had some good ideas too, a true stylist in the making.

Post processing was increasing contrast and decreasing the saturation, adjusting the WB to get a sligtly sepia tone to it. Image was a bit tilted so I corrected that, added the vignetting, front of his shoes were light brown so I took taht out and did some dodge/burn adjustments. Finally sharpened after resizing.

The title is borrowed from a song by John Lennon, somehow that song just popped into my head when I saw this photo.

First off, congrats on a top 10! I didn't vote this challenge, but looking through the comments I am surprised nobody called DNMC. I woulda ding'd you for the fact that if he is a singer, I don't see that background as his environment. I also think the title throws the whole thing off even more. All just my opinion of course. Other than all that, I think it is a great portrait. ...but then you have already established yourself in that regard. :)

I don't think that guy wore the holes in his jeans through back-breaking, groveling-in-the-dirt hard work.

I got the Lennon reference :)

A small black border around the picture might add to it.

This is my favorite for the challenge. I think the use of wb is very effective. You have demonstrated an unusual talent for the craft and art of portraiture.

I would not change a thing here.

Congrats!

Exceptionally effective use of artificial lighting in an environemental portrait. I would love to hear the particulars of you did it. The rocks and ripped jeans worked very well together.

fits the topic well but looks a little phoney - is this guy really a working class hero? or is he just made to look like someone's perception of that term? is pretty dark generally, too much contrast and perhaps a tad bit over sharp

This belongs on a CD or magazine cover ! I love that he has his cig hanging from his lips. It adds that bad boy band feel to it. VERY nice 10 !

Well photographed - the OOF bg is a nice touch..... the model's face and hands are a bit over exposed.

If this guy isn't famous - he should be! He has a great look...rocker or model? Almost looks a little like Jared Leto.
One of my fav photos for the challenge. Great lighting and love the background.

Very evocative shot; says a lot about the subject, his view of himself, your view of him. I could picture this as a pose for a poster of a James Dean movie.

A great portrait and treatment. I'm not sure about the environment bit though - it comes across as too posed, not as a natural setting.
