On my kitchen floor. Grass hoppers are wonderfull because they just sit there and look at you. I was able to shoot over 40 shots without him moving. The only problem was my cat that wanted to pounce on him. This is one of those shots that turned out exactly the way I had imagined. woo hoo.

To the ones who will say "should have used an off centre composition": I disagree. I felt this shot asked for a centered composition horizontaly. Gives it a nice static look, ie. bug staring at you.

Simga 105mm F2.8 EX Macro lens.

Dude, this is awesome. Your NB hoppers are way better looking than the Prairie ones out here in AB. I love this picture. Too bad there were a number of great entries in this one. You always seem to do your best work at the same time as everyone else...Purple looks good on you though.

Well done Jacko, you certainly know how to make your bugs jump (pun intended) off the screen.

Great and funny shot. He is laughing at me :-)) Good negative space around him. Nice macro. Looks something like from the movie "bug's life".

Good concept but a very shallow DOF. My preference in this picture would have been to have a consistent color for the negative space instead of fading from the bright, reflective white to almost black at the top. - 5

How'd you get him to cooperate so well? This is a nice image, though it's a pity that most of the 'hopper is out of focus - it's visually distracting and hard to say whether that's a positive or a negative space.

wow, this must win a ribbon, it is awesome!
I love the colors on the hopper, congrats!

One of the shots of the week, IMO. I like the focal point, it really makes the grasshopper very much "other worldly". You can almost imagine the out of focus legs are not part of it. I might have gone for a little stronger colours in the negative space, though.

Nicely shot subject, good DOF... though maybe a bit too shallow. I really like the way you've created the gradient colour background, it works very well here.

great macro, though I can't say that I think he's defined by his negative space! I like the blank space in the shot though, it does bring attention to your subject.

Impressive use of depth of field! And lots of patience with the grasshopper, too!

Excellent image, but negative space should have a purpose. This is negative space for the sake of the challenge.

10. I love this little guy. The antennas make this image what it is and also aid in making the negative space more interesting. I hope others can appreciate the negative space in this shot as well. Good luck in the challenge.

Awesome. Worthy of a ribbon. The only nitpick is that the white balance seems a bit off, but minor. 10.

I liked this as a thumbnail which is why I opened it up larger to comment on it (I can't vote). I was a little disappointed that the grasshopper's body is not in focus, but I suppose that's either intentional or unavoidable given his...er...pose (do grasshoppers pose? LOL). Anyway, I love his placement on the page, the way he is looking straight on into the camera, the soft reflection underneath him and definitely your use of negative space. Cool picture. Thanks.

This good use of a shallow DoF and the graduation to green nicely adds to the negative space

My favorite bug picture in this challenge so far! It's quite a feat to give so much personality to someone so small. Nice job. :)
