Challenge: Take Two (Advanced Editing IV*)

Lens: Canon EF 300 f/4.0L
Location: Delaware Park

This is an attempt to improve upon "The Grace of Speed", my entry in the Grace challenge. The main differences are a lower angle shot, a tighter crop, and a faster shutter speed. Hopefully it will score at least as well as it's inspiration.

After Voting: Thank you very much to all the voters and commenters. My Take Two shot improved the score of it's original by 1.644.

Harv - I meant to comment on this before. The sharpness of this image really jumps out at me. You forgot to mention in your comments another factor in the difference between this shot and your 'Grace' shot from 2003...equipment! ;^)

Smile and keep having fun!

I thought I commented on this before but I want to tell you how much I love it. I love horse racing in general but your technicals here are perfect for what you are shooting. No post processing needed to add in anything neccesary. Do you photograph for Pimlico? You should. Gotta love the mud!

You replied to my comment on your photo for "Empty Room"... came back to check out your other stuff, since I didn't know who took the photo for Empty Room.... this one caught my eye in this challenge... It must have, because I recognized it immediately...(gave it a 7 also, btw....) Yes I had a Minolta A1, but my wife uses it now... or until we sent it in for slightly out of warranty repair ($189 ouch...may put that money towards another camera instead, didn't like it (or couldn't master it)from the time I got it...

Anyway, very nice shot....

I love horse racing and you have captured it perfectly in this shot. I agree with your using the term grace for it. Adding to my faves.

Great work, Harv, on this essentially flawless image. Amazingly, you actually captured all 4 hooves off the ground on the lead horse :-)

Nice action shot. Contrast seems a little flat but that is probably because you chose to mute the silks a bit.

Really nice action shot. I love the way the mud is being flung by the hooves. This really makes you hear the race noise.

Great shot. Crisp, clean depiction of the action, and I like how the background seems slightly muted compared to the horeses and jockeys.

Fantastic capture. Most newspapers require their journalists to capture the horse with all 4 hooves off the ground. You have succeeded with that.

I love this. Excellent colours and clarity. Love that you caught them on a turn, it gives more dimension to the photo. Action is perfect. One of the top photos in the challenge.

Good photo.
Really captured the speed there, especially with the kicked up sand. Not a fan of the frame however.

Take Two as a challenge is flawed since the voter cannot see Take One. That's DPC's problem, not yours. This is a great! photo.

There is a smudge in the bottom left corner that REALLy disctracts me from this photo and the colours are a little off......HAHAH just kidding. 10!

Great photo! It's pretty cool how you captured almost every horse in midstride(floating in air). The flying dirt really adds to the photo. Very nice!

Great sports image. The only thing I might've done differently would have been to increase the saturation of the silks a little to make the shot a little more vibrant. Only a small thing tho. Very well done.

I would like to see more saturation.
