Challenge: Shadows III (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Pentax *ist DS
Lens: Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD for Pentax
Location: Disney's MGM Studios
Date: Jun 7, 2006
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/2000th
Galleries: Performance, Action
Date Uploaded: Jun 10, 2006

Taken and Disney MGM - Their new Lights, Motors, Action, Extreme Action show. If you have the opportunity, it is a must-see.

This is midway through a 3-story drop. I chose a tight crop to emphasize the shadow, but the long view is really impressive.

Adjusted white balance and contrast, resized and sharpened.

Post-challenge notes.

First of all, a thank you to everyone.

A lot of people asked how I set up this shot. To be honest, it was pure luck. I was shooting some action sequences at the park and was shocked and thrilled when I realized the shadow was so striking.

For those interested, here are the sequence of photos shot of the fall.

finally, I went back and forth on what crop to enter. I really liked this one
,
but was afraid it looked too much like a trampoline shot.

This might be fun to re-edit under the new advanced rules to try to composite the action sequence.

Great captures. While I love the one you chose to enter I think I prefer the one that you say looks like a trampoline shot because it looks more like the shadow is trying to catch the original.

Great job.

Challenge: SHADOWS III
Description: Creatively capture a shadow

Advanced Edit
Extreme Shadow Puppets
Fit: Epitomises the idea behind the challenge 2
Very clever indeed
Aesthetics: Well composed, aesthetically pleasing 2
I like thw ay the eye is drawn from the figure to the shadow and then half down to the open shuttered window
Technical: Technically well executed 2
Maybe it lacks a little detail in the figure?
Wow: Has some impact 1
A good picture that just feels a little flat - and I am not sure why.
Total Score = 7

simple effect but very well done. but take away the title and the shadow doesn't have as much importance in the photo.

06/13/2006 08:26:38 PM
Brilliant. The muted and geometric background is visually appealing, but doesn't distract from the subject. And the shadow is prominent and sharp. The almost silhouetted shape is a strong and bold shape. Really eyecatching composition.

My thoughts: your model is good at trampoline jumping, the house has a European look, somewhere South, where it's hot, my guess would be France. But I could be so wrong. It's a marvellous photo in every way. 9 (I don't vote 10's, nor 1,2,3's).

  Photographer found comment helpful.
06/12/2006 03:27:23 PM
i seriously hope that this is upside down, and it's just a bloke on a trampoline ,or even jumping... but the illusion works (style of the windows etc) so has been brilliantly executed. either that r the picture is the right way up, and the bloke has just been brilliantly executed. it's a really fun and creative shot that meets the challenge splendidly well. 9.

Amazing! How did you get that figure there?
  Photographer found comment helpful.
06/12/2006 11:01:50 AM
Wow, I haven't gotten very far in the voting yet but I can see this winning. It's so odd and intriguing! The colours are good, the repeating shapes/lines of the windows are good and then there's that falling person and shadow. I can't imagine what situation you'd find this in, but well seen and photographed!

Shadow is nice but I am really impressed by the technique. Is this a jump into (sufficiently deep) water, or how is it done? If model dies from broken neck for every shot, I hope it didn't take too many shots/models to get this one!

Just for the idea I cannot give less than 9 ...
