Right when I saw the challenge, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The idea is from a movie I saw as a kid, "The Never-Ending Story". Luckily, I had the perfect weather to pull this off. Hopefully it does well.

The story tells of some mystical planet that is being destroyed by a huge storm, that they call the terrible nothing. I figure destroying a whole planet, leaving the thing desolate, should work perfect for a desolation challenge.

Post Challenge:

Wow! Not exactly a ribbon winner, but top 10 none the less! How can I not be excited? Thanks to all for your comments and votes!

Greetings from the Critique Club

Wow, a very moody photo you have here. I can't believe I missed this during voting. There is a very good balance in this picture, dark clouds on the right, opposing the light parts of the land on the left and bottom. The eye follows a smooth curve all over the image, finally resting on the heavy rain at the center.
The colors are very effective too and the high contrast adds to the very surreal feel that was also feel of the film (and do not forget the books). I can almost feel Atreyu coming galloping at me.

Nothing I can add that would raise your score, although perhaps a border might give some slight plus. I might also have got rid of the small blue patch of sky on the right side of the photo. A very slight nitpick though, only because there's just not anything else to comment on :)

Awesome!!!
Just looking through this challenge now and this is my favorite so far. I pratically grew up on the Never-ending story and this photo encompasses that feeling perfectly!! I just wish there was no break through of light over on the right side where its all dark so that the feeling of the "terrible nothing" coming was stronger- but you cant control the clouds.
Great photo, great title! Nice job :)

Oh beautiful shot. Like the reference of the title to the neverending story, if that is what was intended. 8

another very impressive image that made me go wow! this makes quite the impact, it has drama and lightness two atmospheric conditions meeting, sunny and cloudy and threatening, very well done, the clouds are low and rolling in with a fury, thanx so much for sharing this desolate scene with us.

Awesome picture. I feel like this title is a literary reference I should know, but I can't seem to place it in my memory. Stephen King is what I want to think, but I'm not sure. Or maybe it's a movie, Neverending Story? Anyway, like I said before, awesome shot!

Intense shot. IMO, some selective desaturation might have been even more powerful, as the bright yellow looks a bit too "happy" for desolation. That aside, I'm still a fan. 9
