Challenge: Desolation II (Advanced Editing IV)
Collection: Emotive
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Location: Inside the old historic Pearl Brewery
Date: Jun 18, 2006
Aperture: F8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/400
Galleries: Emotive
Date Uploaded: Jun 18, 2006

This was taken inside the old Pearl Brewery, which one day. ..will have no resemblance to this "look". We haven't started the inside restoration of this building yet, but when we do. ..it will be spectacular :)

Thanks to my model, Danny (TacoVendor), who works with me, and was such a good sport to go out there with me in the Texas heat and help me set it up just right. You're awesome Danny!!!! Don't be surprised if I'm bugging you more in the future. . .because my family HATES posing! :)

Whoever knows me knows that this is not my usual kind of photo, sooooooo it's hard for me to even know if it will be well-received or not. I'm usually into pretty landscapes, cute animals, upbeat people shots. But I had this idea for this challenge, and the photos I took turned out like I had envisioned, so here's to getting out of my comfort zone and doing something totally different :)

It would appear this is more my comfort zone. LOL
I think you did well, and its great your extending your photographic vision trying different things.

I think it being all vertical is somewhat bothersome to me. But I can understand why you shot it this way. I may have liked to see it further away, or with a wide angle and horizontally shot.

The lighting and colors are great though.

What a moving, emotional shot! I loved this so much during voting - was sure it would take a ribbon, but you're close. Hope you get out of your comfort zone more often with these challenge entries, Sandy. You did a great job! The muted colors, the black clothes, and the perfect lighting are what strike me most about this image.

Wonderfully executed! The tones you used really adds to the desolate feeling of this image along with the old bluilding and man with his head in his hands. Great composition! Awsome Job!

I love the composition here - something doesn't feel right though and I can't put my finger on it - maybe its the fact that the light is on the desolate person instead of being away from him ? - 7

this evokes the 19th century somehow, in spite of the sneakers. excellent composition demonstrates how the mind gets trapped in itself... rooms within rooms creating a spiral of despair. 9.

My favorite of the challenge! You have captured the challenge perfectly. Perfect lighting on your subject. The framing of the doorway for the stairs and the man adds to an excellent composition. The color tones are perfect. 10

Fantastic use of the doorway as a frame. Fits the catagory perfectly. Bottom of the stairway, head in hands, it don't get too much more desolate. Use of color and shadows is great. Good job.

This photograph totally captures the desolate heart. It almost looks like a painting. Except for the sneakers, I feel like I am looking into the lonely heart of Edgar Allen Poe. I like the photo.

This "thumb-nail" just "pops" for me, and absolutely "LOVE" it when enlarged. I feel it "so" suits this challenge so well, and have no hesitation in giving it a top score of "10"..... This deserves to ribbon of placed in the top ten.....

I love this pic, and scored it highly - but my only nit is that this guy looks a bit too well dressed to be in such a setting. Though, it does kind of add to the enigma of the image: what is such a well dressed man doing with his head in his hands in such a wretched place? Great pic. Love the tones and textures.
