Challenge: Motion Blur II (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon PowerShot A75
Location: Sandy, UT
Date: Jun 24, 2006
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/8
Galleries: Nature, Water
Date Uploaded: Jun 25, 2006

Taken at the slowest shutter speed I could manage with my 8.0 minimun aperture. I really need to get a ND filter or polarizer.

In processing I adjusted contrast with levels, applied contrast masking to get some detail back in the rocks, and did a little bit with soft light/multiply blending modes on a duplicate layer. I also did some subtle dodging and burning on a 50% gray overlay layer (painted black to burn, white to dodge).

I'm happy with how it turned out in the end. I'm hoping for top 20 with this.

Beautiful golden light and detail on the rocks and the water 'blur' looks just right :o)

From the Critique Club:

Justin, I don't know what I can say about this shot that would improve it. You have spot on focus, DOF and your tones are fantastic! Love the shutter speed that you have chosen here. You have great flow through the shot. That's what I really like about good waterfall shots. The flow through the frame. You really nailed that here.

Why didn't this score better here? I think that is because waterfalls like kittens and flowers are so photogenic that they are easy to shoot. You see them all the time. This kinda makes the voter a little numb when they see them.

Great shot! Keep shootin...

There are a lot of water motion shots in this one, and it has to really needs to be special to stand out. This is a lot like other waterfall shots we've seen both in this challenge and in the past. It's easy to see their allure, though.

By the time I get through rating photos for this challenge, I will be well and truly over waterfall shots!!

But this one is a beautiful example of the genre. Free falling water spray at the top, solid flowing water in the middle, breaking over rocks at the bottom. All nicely framed, with the static elements crisp, perfectly exposed and emphatically moist. Enhanced with just the right amount of exaggeration in the colour.

I'll give it a 10.

As of yet my favorite in this challenge. Really nice contrasty image. Definately meets the challenge. And nice cooperative lighting besides.

I'm kind of sick of waterfalls, but this is very lovely. The glistening rocks really make it for me.
