So how do you depict "stationary?"
This is my best shot - everything else moved...
Not much done to it:
convert to B&W, adjust histogram, crop and resize for DPC.

Hope I at least get back out of the 4's.

I would have liked focus on the axe, perhaps a wider DOF.

I would have liked this better if the focus on the ax were a little sharper and if the handle were wooden and without the lable. Otherwise its rather nice and conveys the topic well. Oh, and maybe a little more breathing room to the sides and above the ax.

A very nice B&W conversion. A couple of suggestions for improvement. First, include a little bit more of the stump in the bottom of the image. It is just as important to show what the hatchet is stuck in as it is to show that it is stuck. Second, the focus looks to be sharper on the end of the handle than on the head of the hatchet. This tends to draw my eyes to the left edge of the photo and away from the main subject.

it'd be cooler with a wooden handle and no writing on it.

Nice idea. The image could use a small bump in contrast - maybe a levels adjustment as it looks underexposed. The sharpest part of the image is the burnt wood at the bottom center. I think for better impact the focal point should have been the hatchet head.
