WooHooo! I am really excited about winning my first ribbon, and I would really like to thank everyone for their votes and comments.

If you are wondering about the stitches, they are pieces of gold embroidery floss glued on my face with spirit-gum, as well as the buttons :)

you remind me of Natalie Maines (the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks) and that's a good thing.

Very belated congratultions.

Hi MacKenzie! I hope you don't mind that I really don't like this shot. This is a personal statement. But I am amazed at the detail that you went through and the the technical perfection (though nothing's perfect) of this shot! The dark is almost "ghostly" dark - GREAT job! The hair looking "almost" blured, the crisp, clear feel of the face, the hauntingly realistic staples in the face, and those eyes!! Again, this is not a photo that appeals to me, but I bet if I put this much effort into a shot, I could get a ribbon too. I didn't vote on this challenge (shame on me), but I probably would have voted it low. (Shame on us who don't "REALLY" look at the challenge photos!!!) Since it's on the "Front Page", I've had time to look at it. Now, I am so very much impressed with your work! If you nailed the challenge or not is not the issue. You have used your creativety and your photographic talent to make me, someone who really dosn't like this shot personnally, to stand up and take notice. I am extremely impressed with your work! I will be looking for more winners from you!!:) Ray

Wow! I didn't see even one comment about the Bride of Frankenstein sporting the latest trends (ala Gold Buttons.) Guess I had to do it! Man! You do have a singular skill because you lit the "staples" so well that I thought, "Those are real! She must be into the goth lifestyle! She's tougher than I am! I couldn't take the pain!"
Then I read your explanation & thought, "Dude, you are such a sophomore! The upper 'stitches' would have proved fatal!"
The Bottom Line is that you are a GREAT photographer when you can create "REAL" from faux! Nice job! :)

This is probably one of the more interesting photos I have seen. I actually had to stop and look at this one for a while to determine how it made me feel. Great Job. 9

07/29/2006 10:55:11 PM
This is a clever idea and I like it very much. My only criticism is the set up of the stitch line itself. The stitches are real, the buttons are real and while I realize your model probably wouldnt let you carve a real line on her face, this line looks like a soft felt marker. Perhaps you could have used something more substantial. Not that I could do this well - so take a grain of salt. This is an excellent image.

Not something pretty to look at, but interesting all the same. I really like the eyes and the golden tone to the skin. I guess I'll give this a 10 just because it does really creep me out, even if its not my "style".

Despite the stitches and buttons, I'm drawn instanly to the eyes. The model has beautifuul eyes, but your capture of them is exquisite. Very nice!

Overall REALLY LIKE IT! i find the paint around the lower part of her neck and the "stiches" up her lower neck take away some from the overall photo. I'm pretty sure it's primarily because of your DOF, but also the soft, suttle focus, which, by the way, brings it all together! Very nice job!

07/24/2006 05:28:53 PM
very weird! I like your use of blank space. I understand what you were going for with the needle and thread in her mouth... and I see the need for it... but to be truthful the fact that the thread leads my eye out of the picture really bothers me - both in the thumbnail and the main image... I also would have liked to have perhaps seen her eyes not have that goldish tone. Nice sharp image though... imaginative... fun. -8-

Sorry, but as artistic and golden as those stitches are, for me they distract from an otherwise stunning portrait. Is there a message here? Outside of the stitches - the lighting is wonderful and the gold powder/coloring is nicely subtle. The model is lovely with fabulous skin and eyes. I'm not sure about all the empty space on the right.

This to me is a winning image for this challange.....
It should be the "Blue"..... It could be the "Red".... or even the "Yellow", but it really does deserve to win..... I just "LOVE" it.....

This one rates high on being different. It is also very well technically executed. The proportion of negative space and subject is just perfect. I really like the soft focus, warm lighting and the way eyes are getting highlighted. Goodluck.9.

I want to be really positive about this shot, because you have one stunning woman and technically, a fantastci shot with great lighting and nice composition...my only problem is the 'why' factor...I don't get it...maybe I am slow...

I still love the shot and congratulate you for the effort and time...
