First time I've seen this shot.....
It’s brilliant.
I'm sure you've read all the superlatives below, so I won't embarrass myself by repeating them, I'll just add it to my favorites and hope to emulate it one day.

cool shot! next time, i recommend dipping the slices on lemon juice to lessen the browning of apples. either that or angle it in a way that it's totally horizontal. cheers!

Very creative shot. During voting I was worried the brown on the cut parts of the apple would hurt this. I'm very glad to see it didn't. great job. congratulations.

If you had rubbed olive oil on the apple slices they would not have turned brown as quickley, a thin layer of mayonaise would do the same thing.

Still a great picture and one of my favs! The above tip is something I learned on the Food Network :D

well deserved 3rd. I gave you a 9 at vote. The only thing that i thought was a little of a "10" was the browning of the flesh, but i am ausuming that this shot may have been the last of many that you had taken for this shoot. For next time I always used a little cooking oil on the cuts to keep them "fresh" or spraying them with water as you go. But if the browness was what you where trying to achieve i'll give you a post challenge 10!!

This is really cool. I love the colors and the patern of the background. You need some orange juice on your apples so they don't turn brown. ;)

Really neat idea and pretty good execution. The color is perfect and I like how you've let the apple turn a little brown (maybe it just happened cause you took too long though :) ). What I don't like though is the visible halo I can see around most of the outer edges of the apple (maybe 5 or 8 pixels out). It seems that the background was maybe blurred in post? Either way... I give a 9

This is great. It could have been better had you dipped the apple slices in lemon juice to maintain their whiteness. Maybe a better contrast. Still 8

Beautifully-composed, I really like the subtle coloring, the slight reflection in the lower-right, and the glow of the tops of the apples, oh, and the fact that you cut, then re-stacked the apples so creatively. Well done.

wish the dark, rough bit on the lowest right piece of apple wasn't there. I find myself focusing on it and wanting to flick it off, when I'd rather be visually exploring the textures & colors in other areas of the photo.

07/27/2006 07:41:15 PM
You know... this is really cool to look at. Much better than just fruit on a colored background. The only drawback (and it's being really picky) is the fruit browning on you. If it was whiter it would really contrast alot better, but kinda hard to offset physics huh? :) I'll still give it an 8.

squeeze lemon juice onto the apple slices to keep them from browning so quick, btw, this is a really cool photo, creative and matches the BG really well

This is my fav of the fruit photos. Great texture and variable tones and hues--even in the background! Wow, what a concept. I think that was what lacked in the other fruit photos--they were just too monochromatic (if that can be?).
  Photographer found comment helpful.
07/27/2006 02:32:07 PM
Very creative idea and great execution. If you wanted to create something along these line again without the browning, I've heard that lemon juice helps preserve apples a little longer. Great photo!

i like the lighting and the background. It's a neat idea and the composition is good. Only nitpick is that the apple slices are starting to brown and it is (slightly) offputting. Still a good picture.

I really like this one. Colour is great and the idea well executed.

A tip for next time would be to rub the apple slices in lemon juice. It stops them going brown so quickly (old chef's trick, not that I'm an old chef of course!)

This will probably ribbon but honestly the PP looks so contrived and has been done so many times now... Still, a nice shot. Composition could be a little more interesting, arrangement of slices notwithstanding. 6.
