This is the photo I wanted to enter into "Lines II". My internet went down and I couldn't upload it!

Instead, I showed it to Tate (metate), who did some editing magic and made it much better than I could have done. Thanks Tate!

It's the leaf of an Elephant Ear plant, partially opened.

This was done with basic editing.

Great photo. Love the smooth, yet wavy texture. And the lighting is spot on.

Fantastic picture - love that you converted it to black and white, too!

This one is definitely not something I should take any credit for - really great shot by ROX ...
Now that I look at it there was a crop and rotate and possibly curves and sharpness and that's what you get.

Thanks again Tate!

Here's the color crop (for crayonto see).

And here's my edit, from which metatate did his magic.

OH MAN! -- I wish that would have been submitted, I bet Rox' does too :]! She is also good at making color adjustments but i probably just got lucky on this one.

Looking at it now is so great because it's been a while.

Anyway, the great stuff was already in the photo, it's just a matter of amplifying it I suppose. I usually use hue and saturation as a layer and do visual adjustments. This is a good way to create the black-and-white while maintainting the avialability of colors in the RGB spectrum (not converting to greyscale). I also use curves - but when using curves you need to visualize what you want a bit - if there are lines that fall on a certain part of the curve, you can bring those out by varying the curve in that spot - always keeping the curve simple to make sure it looks natural.

There are also contrast settings in both Noise Ninja (increases the contrast in details rather than overall) and "Shadow/Highlight" (midtone contrast only). These are much better than Photoshop's standard "Brightness/Contrast" adjustment which should hardly ever be used because it doesn't hold the extremes well (highlites get blown out and dark details are lost).

These are tips that don't necessarilly apply to this image but I'm trying to get the orig again from Roxanne so maybe i can spark my brain cells to remember exactly what I did :]

It's a rich image. How about Tate telling us how he achieved such rich tones and contrast?

Wow! The lighting and detail are amazing here! Too bad about the internet thing not being able to submit this beauty, it would've done VERY well! Nice job!

WOW! Did I say wow? I meant WOW! This is such a great exposure. The detail is breath-taking! The B/W processing is perfect. It would have done well in the challenge if entered...definitely a 10 from me. Really great shot Roxanne! Very creative and shows an appreciation for an alternate vantage point. Very well done!

actually I do think this is wonderfully captured.
It's just me, but I'd like to see this in colour :)

stunning. I love whatever mysterious thing is going on in the lower left corner.

texture; contrast; this is one hell of a shot. so flowing and abstract; so detailed. I like how the light hits the ripples but still does not make you aware of the angles or pull you fron the abstract.

Perhaps seeing edges on a whit background with more light and contrast would be an option.

All in all a really interesting shot.

WOW! This is an amazing study in b/w Roxanne! I really like how you composed this with the leading line drawing my eye through the frame and out to the lines of the leafs. This has such a "smooth" feeling to it, I think I could almost touch it!
