I love lightning shots. Upside down they look almost like waves in the ocean. Great shot.

This is so hauntingly lovely, Van. It is just so beautiful. I love the glow in the clouds about the lightning. Your lightning shots appeal to me so much more than some of the others - you can still see some detail in the clouds and they have such atmosphere. So many of the other shots are just pure black with some lightning bolts in them.

*Critique Club*
Yo Van!
Your pic was given to me for the critique.
To begin, I need to tell you I kinda feel stupid for critiquing such a fine pic and someone with your experience (Had a look at your profile and portfolio!!!).

Firstly, what your pic made me feel? When I saw the image, I could feel the wind, I could hear the thunder, I could smell the humidity in the air. Aside from the thunder, there's a kind of stillness in the air...No birds, dogs hiding...Some people fear thunder and lightning.

What I like of the image? The power it gives off. I think this power is from the amount of space you gave to the clouds, thus I like your composition. The colors given off of the clouds are nice. I like how you didn't crop the top of these clouds so we could see the lightning illuminate the upper layers. Your focus seems to be pretty good.

What I liked a bit less? Well, the pic is a bit of a shoehorn for this challenge. As mentionned in the comments you got, it's not really fire, but you made your title fit the challenge. This doesn't take anything away from the quality of this photograph. Aside from this, again as mentionned in your comments, the tilted horizon is (just a little bit) distracting. I totally get that it was a hill, and I think the clouds would've looked a bit weird had you fixed it.
You placed well in this challenge, and it's well deserved.
Not much else I can add. You know what you're doing. Just keep it up!

Thanks for the comments. The storm was moving only about 5 MPH, so I was able to experiment from 5 to 30 second exposures. So, it was easy to get some goodies.

FYI- Unless its water, horizons can be tilted, as this is slight up hill from left at approx. 4700 ft. to right at 4750 ft. Here in Colorado, we have little flat land. :)

This is definitely one of my favorites. Awesome shot!

Great capture of an overcast day burned to make it look like a thunderstorm!
; )

Fantastic sense of scale with some great turmoil in the clouds. A little scary too.

The lightning is great but...level the horizon and crop out lots of the sky where it is just dark

Lightning is an electrical discharge not fire. I like the picture a lot, very nicely done but IMO shoehorned into the challenge.

Always love the lightning shots. Especially here in Texas.

IMO does not meet the challenge. I was expecting the subject to be fire.

a gorgeous and exciting image. i normally consider lightning pictures to be passe and havign seen so many, not really get stirred up by them. THIS, however, is stunning. the lightning itself is beautiful, but the way the underside of the cloud is illuminated is starkly beautiful. i think the amount of sky in the top half is a bit excessive, to be honest, given the beauty of light and colours in the lower third. it's a really lovely image. 9.

Fire and electricity are not the same thing. Not to mention that your horizon is crooked. However, it is a very nice lightning capture, even if it is shoehorned in here.

Beautiful capture of lightning! Would have maybe benefited from a rotate to get the ground horizontal, however (although not sure how that would have made the clouds look). I don't think this meets the challenge as much as a lot of the others but I am not marking down for that because it is very definitely related. Again, beautiful capture - you should be proud.

not QUITE fire, but still a good shot

I like the composition with all the cloud up top. The image could do with a slight rotation as the ground seems tilted. Maybe a slight color adjustment to make it a little more dramatic. Great catch of lightning, tho!

IMO, you could've cropped out at least half of the top sky portion without losing any of the drama. Great capture though!
