A variety of beans, grains, and lentils from a local (East) Indian grocery, "tastefully" arranged on a plate. I used some masa paste (made from maize or corn, for tortillas) as a base to help keep them from rolling around too much.

Handheld, auto-exposure settings, morning sunlight. Slight tone adjustment and one light pass with USM.

While I do appreciate different aproaches to things, I don't think that it works well for this shot in my opinion.
I do have to agree with the others that I think it would have been more effective with the focus more towards the front of the shot, or either have all of the beans in focus.
If you did the focus this way because you thought that the beans in the back were more interesting, than you could have shot from an opposite angle.
Your focus is really good in the back though, we get to see lots of nice detail and sharp lines, and I like that. I'm a huge fan of detail, and we get to see a lot of that here.
I like the arrangement of the beans. I think that you seperated them well except for one little orange bean that sneaked into the white beans near the front. He's bothering me a little cause he's so very much out of place there. shame on him.
Overall, I think it's a great subject for macro.

Your focal point is wrong here. It should have been more in the lower third of your frame.

YOur depth of field might be more effective if the foreground were in focus rather than the rear of the shot. Nice lines, textures and shapes here.

Great job with the depth of field. Love the colors separating the different types of beans. The beautiful shadows and the reflections help to bring out the subjects in the picture.

Cool idea. I would have enjoyed it more had the focused area been closer to the observer.

Ermm... okay. I don't quite "get" it, but I would like to see more focus. As it is, my eyes are drawn to the green ones as the most interesting things.

Would have worked better with the focus more towards the front of the shot.

Lower left corner is is shadow and out of focus. I would like to see the whole shot in focus and evenly lit.

I really like the colors and textures in this shot, the slight blurring on the objects in the front is a little distracting though.
