Challenge: Rule of Thirds II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS
Location: National Zoo
Date: Sep 4, 2006
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/160
Galleries: Animals
Date Uploaded: Sep 5, 2006

two of the new cubs at the National Zoo. Watched them play for about 45 minutes, got some great shots. But its so hard to CONSCIOUSLY adhere to rule of thirds... So this is what I ended up with for this challenge. This almost became my sepetember free study but I still have 25 days!

at 400mm handheld

open, crop, curves, KODAK digital Gem (noise reduction), hue and sat (reduce green, raise master), sharpen, add border, save for web.

BTW - that's a concrete wall behind them. The day was very over cast and it was 8AM - 800 ISO was pushing it, as you can see by the shutter speed. The focus is dead on and the image looks much better large size if you don't mind the noise - I was able to use a gaussian blur on the big one that wasn't legal in basic editing.

I'm usually cool with noise, but this had a kind of overshapened low-contrast look that didn't work for me (I have no idea why sometimes I love it and sometimes I don't). But I still gave it a 6 for good composition and a wonderful subject. Those tigers have so much personality. This pic is growing on me!

A bit blurry on the focus and the colors seem a bit flat. Great capture though from a composition point of view. This would have served well in an advanced editing challenge. I am a sucker for tiger shots. We have no babies at our zoo.

What a nice photo, really fits to my definition of ROT. The subject is clear yet there is interest throughout the photo. Well done 10

What a great subject! Is this a small crop of a large picture? Or are you using a 2x extender? There is something a bit off. But I like it alot! Great job and good luck. Hope their mommy didn't catch up with you :)

Adorable shot; the blue-green cast on the leaves doesn't seem natural to me.

there is something wrong with the depth of field - it looks hazy. otherwise, this is a great shot!
