Challenge: Leading Lines III (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Location: Coniston Water, Lake District, UK
Date: Sep 15, 2006
Aperture: F9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/3s
Galleries: Black and White, Water
Date Uploaded: Sep 19, 2006

Taken at Dawn from a third, somewhat older jetty.

Processing:
Convert from RAW with an agressive curve to retain maximum shadow and highlight detail.
Noise Ninja (local contrast boosting would show every speckle).
A stack, and I do mean a stack of curve, a couple of levels and a brightness/contrast layer.
Several passes of varying large radius USM to improve local contrast, fading some as required to minimize haloing.
Conversion to duotone by hue/sat layer set to colourize. Choose a hue and set the mood with lightness and saturation.
Resize and sharpen for web.
Just wish I could have cloned out the dust spots and distractions, but this IS basic editing rules..

... Wow ... Never expected one of my holiday snaps to do so well =). I've edited the processing details to give a bit more detail as I have never spent so much time (about four hours) editing a single image before.

For those that asked to see here is the image "in the raw", althouh it could obviously look a lot better than it does like this. Had I wanted colour I have some much better shots from different mornings, but they would lack the ray like cloud formations and not be such a nice fit for the challenge.

The reflections of the dock carries the eyes right into the distant mountains in such gentle manner. An outstanding composition and indeed a charmer in sepia. Kudos! Congratulations on your Blue.

One of my picks to do well in this project. You've managed to capture our gase and lead it out to the mist and up to the striations in the sky.
Excellent work indeed!
09/26/2006 09:57:49 PM
fits the subject well
I enjoy color better than B & W
not sure but I thought B & W provided more contract, but I do not see it here.

Wonderful job on this, the mist and reflections are beautiful. I like that there are leading lines in the docks as well as the clouds.

Lovely. Evokes a nostalgic sense. Beautiful smooth water. I like the hint of sepia as well.
09/25/2006 02:34:47 PM
Almost too serene to be beleived. Beautiful scene and very well photographed.

I love the mist over the treas at the back, and the stillness of the water is lovely. Slightly more contrast in the image might have made it a little more striking.

Just plain excellent in every respect. I'm not usually a fan of sepia, or sepia-like stuff, but this is just enough tinting without being overpowering, and it works well with the subject matter. 10

Stunning picture
09/21/2006 02:53:30 PM
Beautiful image, very soft. Nice tones. Crop could have been tighter, losing maybe 10-15% of the right side, eliminating the white thing at horizon level, and shifting the end of the ramp more at 2/3 of the frame. Two dust speckles on top, left of the middle. Horizon is tilt a little bit. You have in hands what can be a perfect image, in need of little adjustments.

The lines take me to the center...very effective. I like the clarity and fog in the background. It would be interesting to see the color version.

Very beautiful landscape and composition. Lovely use of duo aswell. Really like how the bushes disapear in fog. I wonder if there is possible to get more contrast on sky... Top rating.

A nice image that IMO would have been improved (at least for the topic of this challenge) by shooting from the end of the jetties so that the lines created by them would have drawn the eye into the picture more.
