Camera: Canon EOS-5D

This is my wife Henny again :) We were going to take pictures of another person just like this but they got sick last minute and we thought this would be too much fun to not do so she volenteered to be the model although it was up for discussion that I would do it this time. The dirt is regular flower pot mud we bought in a local flower shop and she also darkened parts of her face with dark eye makeup.

However, we took this real late during an overcast and gloomy day, you see the camera settings were at f1.8, iso1600 and still only got a shutterspeed of 1/80 so there really was no option other than for me to take these photos as Henny isnt as familiar with the DOF and focusing of the camera as I am. It was DAMN funn to put all that dirt on her, hehehehe :P

Anyway, only lighting was a single reflector, the plan was to use two if we had a model but I am totally satisfied with the lighting in this shot.

Post processing was mainly just raw conversion, b/w done with channel mixer, curves adjustmens, a little dodge burning and small amount of healing brush.

Wow, an amazing picture! I enjoy the work of mud and makeup together on her face... the B&W makes the picture! She has a good glare too! :)

Congrats on your ribbon; such a fantastic photograph. The dirt spot in the bottom left is distracting. I also find your wife's left eye draws to much attention. (possibly because her head is tilted) I really love the texture of the dirt on her hair and face. Just a beautiful shot!

Anyway, congrats. I really have to make a trip there to Iceland soon to observe you work. I am serious.:)

doll eyes suck. This pic is amazing. I would add a little more detail to the whites of the eyes. It will only add to the grittiness, and make her look more real. The way it is now is disgusting.

Yes, the viewer is at once overwhelmed with tactile feeling of this young lady bathed in planting soil. Despite the heavy bathing the image remains compelling because of the eyes and facial expression. A handy winner for this challenge. Congratulations on your Blue!

I'm not voting in this challenge but I would have given your photo a 10. Good luck to ya! Ok, update - I looked thru all the photos, I think yours is the winner. Maybe some of those 'hand' photos will edge it out but...this photo is tops to me. Great job!

Like the black white treatment and DOF. Her Blond hair and whites of her eyes really makes this shot pop! She's very pretty and still looks gorgeous despite all that dirt. Very professional and edgy.

12/12/2006 10:07:42 PM
Offer her a towel and a beer! This girl looks like she's been having a good time at the mud hole. Good use of extra large aperture for shallow depth of field. Good in B&W too. Color would reset the attention even more on the eyes and away from the dirt.

Odd picture. The hair and shoulders look almost like a negative, whereas the face/neck don't. It's a beautiful image in a way, although, what is missing (to me) is any reason why such a beautiful young woman would get all muddy like that, especially with makeup on. ~9
