I saw this many months ago and the visuals instantly captured my attention and imagination. You did a wonderful job in this composition. I love the deep red hue of the heart shadow that falls across the page. Your lighting here is wonderful for the color tone is crisp and clean white light that allows the red heart to really pop off the page. Sharpness and details of the book are in wonderful clarity allowing the viewer to read the words of the book. I found it interesting that you choose a book explaining scientific terms for the heart to be cast upon. To me this projects an idea of love defined in scientific or technical terms with specific relation to how the shadow is cast from that camera filter. It is both by luck and design that I reserved this to be my 1,000 comment after leaving comments for all entries into the Déjà vu III challenge. Thank you for being the inspiration behind a composition that has ‘haunted’ me for many months to get it right. Your tutorial on how you created this photo was instrumental in assisting me in my own offshoot composition spring to life.

Wow clever shot!!! The red adds the extra dimension.

this is a great shot.

maybe its just me though.. but I would have chosen a romance novel as the backdrop, not about electrocells. maybe i'm missing the point on that one.

also, if you could somehow crop the filter itself out, I think it would be even more impactful.

Since joining DPC in November (2003), I`ve been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the work that gets submitted.
However, this particular shot caught my eye almost immediately, and still remains my favourite piece of photography on view here.
From the idea to the execution..it is absolutely perfect.
I know it`s a bit late in the day...but congratulations on a superb job and one which I use as a benchmark for my work.
(Still a long way off, but I`m hopeful)

Thats a great photo. It was a photo similar to that which inspired me to try this technique a long time ago. It was only with this challenge that I thought about entering a shot like it.

Thanks everyone for all your kind words.
Indi, I didn't diffuse the light no, and I didn't spot that glare until you mentioned it, so thanks. When I reshoot I think i'll try diffusing it, and I'll also choose a better book to use :P

Awe. I didn't vote in this challenge so I'm glad you got a ribbon and made it onto the front page. It's very cute. I like how the words aren't all completely clear so that they aren't too very distracting. Did you diffuse the light? Seems to be a bit of glare along the left side. I like that it's off center and at a slight angle though. Congrats!!

It's great to get the first ribbon with the 300D so soon after buying it, and hopefully there are many more on the way from the other great photographers with the camera. Who knows, maybe one day we can compete with the 10D?

not that it matters, I don't get the connection to the book, or if its just the right kind of book for the shot. Maybe I'm looking too deep here. Excellent idea, the book thing isn't taking anything from your score, just curious

What an excellent idea. Very creative. The only thing I personally would change is the book or passage - maybe I'm not getting it, but I don't see a meaningful connection between the text and the image. Other than that, flawless. 9

Super clear image. The shadow may be secondary to the light shining through the filter but nevertheless I for one give you a 10 for creativity.

10/27/2003 08:36:13 PM
it's not really clear that this is on the definition of "photography" -- kind of wish it was a photography book, or a love story, to make that more obvious. on the whole though this is a very neat effect, and I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen it before.
