I'm not sure this is my BEST photo of 2006, but it's certainly one of the ones I love the most. Probably because it conjurs up such happy memories of being there! That, and I really love perspective photos that emphasize the massive size of something by how tiny something else looks next to it. Estes Park is so beautiful. If you've never been there, its just breathtaking the way those enormous mountains surround that quaint little "Christmas Town" in the valley!

This is the Stanley Hotel where author Stephen King got stranded one New Year's Eve and was inspired to write "The Shining".
_______________

Thanks for all the comments everyone! Just a note to all the people who commented on my selective desaturation on this photo: I didn't selectively desaturate this at all. That's just the color of those amazing Rocky Mountains. To me that's why they are so beautiful. They are rugged mighty ROCKS towering over the world and I didn't think they needed anything to add or detract from them. Except, I think Option might be on to something in that maybe it would be a good photo for black and white. I think I'll try that :)

Oh good grief, I can't comment on all of these but this is so neat! I never knew about it or would have gone to see it.

Great work!

Beautiful. The juxtaposition of the Motel (which is obviously a very large building to begin with) against that mamouth mountain is just amazing.

Sandy, loved this shot and shows your great talent. I thought this would have finished a lot higher.

Did not pick this for you Sandy, well done, a good finish in a tough challenge.

This is a glorious shot, Sandy. How would it have done in B&W? It has strong contrast and a lack of vibrant colour, leading me to think it would benefit from a B&W treatment. Nevertheless, the composition is there (as always) and I congratulate you on another wonderful (if underrated) mountain landscape. Best of luck in 2007!

6.2?!? 6. frigging 2?!? Sheesh. What a masterful shot - you did exactly what you set out to do as far as showing the difference in size. Well done. :) And congrats on getting your average over 6!

Hey congratulations Sandy. This picture pushed you over a goal you've had to have your average score 6.0 or greater. This picture did it for you!!

The partial desturation here is causing too much of an imbalnce in this photograph for me. I can only imagine the mountains would have been better subdued in color perhaps, but not desaturated, or an overall black & white conversion.

Lovely scene. Good DOF. Overcast sky brings out the colours of the building well.

Holy freakin' cow, that's impressive. I'll bet this looks even better in large size! Wherever this place is, you can sell this to them.

at first, i was a bit taken aback by the overall lack of color in the image. after spending some time with it, though, it has really grown on me. the sharpness, especially from the distance, is perfect, and the composition really brings home just how insignificant all of our human efforts really are, no matter how grandiose they may seem...

I love the way the mountain absolutely dwarfs the buildings, which are not that small either!

interesting use of desat. I think the BW portion could be more contrasted.

Nice shot, really makes one want to go there. The mountains and architecture really give a nice sense of scale to each other. I wish there were just a little more to view underneath the hotel (or whatever it is), but just a minor nitpick in a beautiful photo.

splendid shot! I love how the mountains are seemingly grayish and colourless, dull, lifeless.... while the houses and trees are colourful and alive.

Your title tries to move my focus towards the incredible mountains, however your processing grabs my focus to the hotel in the foreground. I wish you had done the reverse and left the colours in the mountains. Nonetheless, a very nice image.

Very Magestic! The size of that mountian is certainly grand!! The clairity in this image is just amazing and the colors are fantastic. I LOVE the contrast of the small white bldgs. with the red roofs against the grandeur of the mountain. BEAUTIFUL Capture.

Very nice - the colours are amazing. Wouldnt mind having a little more of the ground in front of the white houses though.

I love the feeling of scale in this image. The slate grey of the rocks is in excellent contrast to the red and white of the buildings. The focus is superb, and I think the composition works very well.

A slight boost in the contrast and warm up the tones alittle by removing dome cyan and this would really snap. Nice detail
